Default 91 EF D15 ECL when pushed too hard

Hi all,

I have a 91 EF with stock D15 manifold fuel injection engine. Engine is a reman one and I also have a 5 speed tranny (was 4 speed originally). Recently I replaced the distributor oil seal. It is working fine when I am not on highway. When I'm driving it hard on highway at round 75 mph, the ECL will usually come on and the engine go dead, I would have to turn off the key and turn it back on to reset the ecu to fix it. It is really annoying when you are on highway and there are cars behind you.

I am suspecting the timing being too advanced. Maybe I will have to retard it a little bit? To retard the timing, I should rotate the distributor out towards the front of the car, correct?

I am also curious to know what sensor actually triggered the ECL? Is that the knock sensor? Does D15 have knock sensor?? If it is the knock sensor why I don't feel engine knocking when ECL appears ?

If it is not the timing / knock sensor, then what could cause the issue?

what code(s) do you have showing on the ECU? this will tell you where to start - could be a number of different things that cause it - whenever you get a CEL (check engine light) the codes are stored in the ECU and remain there until you physically reset the ECU by removing power to it, either by disconnecting the battery or removing the hazard fuse in the under hood fuse box - turning off the ignition only causes the check engine light to go off and does not reset the ECU
