Default must turn steering wheel to crank start 09 civic

I just put a new battery in my car and I am having trouble starting it. Had problems before replacing the battery as well. The car wont turn over unless I turn the steering wheel to the left what turning the key to crank it. Can anyone help me with this problem?

likely the starter is bad, instead of turning the wheel hit thr starter with a hammer before starting it to test

It sounds like you might have a faulty ignition switch in your steering column. If the wheel needs to be cranked to the left on starting, it might mean that you have a broken wire in the ignition circuit that is making proper contact when the wheel turns left. The engine, once started, wouldn't need the circuit to be activated as the ignition doesn't engage after the engine is started.
