I'm new to this forum and appreciate any insights you all can give me.
I currently have a stock 94 civic VX, works great, 50mpg and so on. I live in western Oregon and it rains a bunch in the winter. The rain varies from drizzle to downpour. So, my VX doesn't have the intermittent wiper function. I also have this crashed (I didn't crash it) 92 civic DX hatchback which does have intermittent wipers. So the question is can I take out the wiper motor and controller on the DX and plop it into the VX and expect that the wiring harness and wires therein are the same?

I did this many years ago to my '92 VX.

there is an intermittent wiper relay circuit in the ICU: Integrated Control Unit, located in the rear of the under dash fuse box
there is also the switch and the two additional wires needed to make it work.

wires:
wiper switch(pin3) to fusebox(pin3) - yel/blu wire from factory
wiper switch(pin7) to fusebox(pin1) - blu/grn wire from factory

you will have to pull apart the column to get to the switch (and swap it) --> get to it Fix your EG Wiperswitch
you will have to pull down the underdash fuse box to unplug and remove the ICU

the wires you may get lucky and they are all ready populated, you may have to pull them from the donar car

Try replacing the wiper control stalk with the one with intermittent setting. I think my friend did that with his DX and that's all he needed to do. It was 12 years ago so I don't remember all the details.

 

When I did this in my 94 CX, I had no wiring changes to make. I simply swapped the wiper stalk and ICU and it worked. My parts came form a Del Sol. Perhaps the 92 had a slightly different harness.

As mentioned, you have to replace both the wiper stalk, and the ICU on the back of the under-dahs fuse box. It's a pretty easy upgrade if you follow these tips...

Stalk replacement:
- Unscrew the lower steering column cover (3 screws) and carefully pry the top & bottom apart (they are snapped together).
- Unplug the back of the wiper stalk
- To remove the stalk without removing the steering wheel, use a phillips screwdriver bit and a small 1/4" wrench (or adjustable wrench) to slowly remove the two screws retaining screws on the wiper stalk
- Gently pry the stalk out (it's clipped into place)
- Install is the reverse of removal

ICU replacment:
- Remove lower dash fuse box cover
- Un-bolt the under-dash fuse box from the chassis
- Pull the fuse box down as best you can
- You may have to un-plug a few connectors to get the ICU on the back (I can't remember)
- Gently pry the ICU out (it's in there really tight)
- Install is the reverse of removal

You can go one further and get an ICU from a 96-00 Civic that also has a Lights-on indicator. IIRC, you need to add a wire, but that's it.

Also, you can swap the rear wiper over too. But that gets a little more involved. I'm a fan of the rear wiper though. Check my signature for DIYs.

 

As deschlong said. Use the 96-00 Civic so you will have a headlight warning if you remove the key and the lights are on. No additional wires are needed. It’s plug & play. I’ve done it twice recently.
