Cranks right up. Goes to fast idle then backs down to normal. But there is vibration and what I call a growling noise, at idle and while driving. Whole car is vibrating and rear mirror even vibrates. It is an automatic.
Can this issue be narrowed down from the above information? Search indicates it could be: engine mount, harmonic balnacer, coil, accessory bearing, flex plate out of balance (on an auto?), water pump.

If it's at idle and while driving has to be coming from engine, either a misfire or engine mount.

Have someone watch the engine movement if you hold the brakes and give it a little gas while not moving but in gear (don't run them over). If it's a bad mount the engine will move a lot.

A bad misfire would normally throw a code but start by checking spark plugs, see if one looks lean or wet.

 

Thanks, 2x0. I'm pretty sure the engine isn't misfiring. I have not heard it skip a single time. But the engine mount sounds suspect. I hope that's all it is.

Turned out it was the water pump bearing.

 

Huh The water pump bearing was making the motor shake? Was there a noise ie squeak,grind,thump whirring ?
