Jumped timing.. Or not
So I posted awhile ago about the B18A swapped EF I bought. I was sure the T belt tensioner failed and it jumped a LOT of timing, as the engine just locked up with no strange sound, no lights or anything. Well after buying new tools I finally got the head pulled off and everything is pristine. Aside from carbon buildup everything looks fine. Even the cylinder walls look great, for a car that burned oil. You guys think a main bearing seized died or what? I'm pulling the oil pan in a little bit but I've never heard of anything like this. Will post results when I drop the pan.
Found out what happened. The rod bearing spun and for some reason this happened simultaneously. Strange because as I said there was no knock or any sound at all. I was just driving down the street at 25 mph and the engine just stopped with no warning. Felt like I hit a brick wall. Thankfully, there's minimal damage to the block. The cylinder wall still looks great, there's just a tiny chunk missing from the very bottom, where the cylinder ends. About 5mm wide, and 3mm tall. Since D series blocks get notched all the time I don't see this as an issue. Crank still turns with little effort so the main journals are probably fine. But the crank itself is probably shot. :/
never heard of a rod exploding under minimal load and with no warning before. Just my luck I guess.
