Let me start by first saying hello to everyone. I am a new Honda Civic owner, I have never actually owned a Honda before. I have read quite a few discussions on problems similar to mine but not quite the same, so if this has been discussed I do apologize. I just recently purchased a 03 Civic EX. Let me start by first showing my trouble codes.
I have major misfiring going on. From what i have read on this site i dont believe its the cat causing misfire. More so the misfiring causing the cat code. The girl i got it from also just had the timing belt changed and reset. All the plugs look okay. They have been changed also. I dont think the cam position sensor has been changed tho. I have also read that it could be my valves needing adjusted, but I'm not sure if it's that, because they are very quiet. And I don't hear any noise from the actuator either when started. On a really cold start it takes about 10 to 15 minutes for it to start missing, after its warmed up it does it. There has been a couple times when i would kill it and try to start it wouldnt start. I would let it sit for a few minutes and it would start back. There has only been one time that the engine has died on me and that is when I was on the interstate driving about 60 to 70mph and it started to mis and jerk violently. It took sitting for about 10 minutes to restart. Of course after that i havent went over 40mph. Actually i stoped driving it completely. Do yall think it could be the cam position sensor? And is there a way to check it first? I say that because I can't afford to be buying parts that I don't need. Or has anyone seen this before? I have seen a bunch of cat codes problems on here but not with these codes to. Thanks!
With that quantity of codes, I would tend to think that the timing belt wasn't installed properly and that the belt has skipped a tooth or more. This could easily cause damage internally (mainly to the valves), so I would suggest getting it towed to a reputable Honda dealer and having the timing belt inspected (if you can't do it yourself).
Thats what did happen a couple of months ago. She had the belt replaced and it was still running bad (missing). She then went to another shop and they told her just that. That the belt was installed wrong and it skipped a couple of teeth(i have all the invoices and called them today) they said the belt was good. They just set it properly because it was wrong. Tomorrow i will break it down and have a look at it.

The D17 is an interference engine. So, if the belt was off a bunch of teeth, you've probably got a bunch of bent valves in the head and will probably need a new engine.
It was off by two teeth when they checked it. Thanks for the advice but i hope i dont need a new engine man lol. Im certainly not jumping to that conclusion yet.

Whenever buying a car you always drive it for atleast 5 miles and without turning it off, check for codes, if they don't let you check for codes move on to the next vehicle.
Just wanted to give a update incase anyone else has these codes ever. I didnt really get any decent advice on here at all. Except check compression and it was fine. I checked my camshaft position sensor and it was bad. I changed that and my plugs and reset ecu. Checked timing and its right on the money. No codes and she runs like it was brand new. Crossing fingers it stays good. And btw i already knew it had codes on it. It was misfiring. I figured it wasnt that big of a problem. And it wasnt. And i got the car really cheap. Its a super nice little car. And in really good shape so well worth the 150 bucks put in it!

thanks for the advice was sarcastic....because all your advice was is that i need a new engine. I mean come on man the fact you could only tell me what kind of engine i have....yea thanks for the crappy advice...this forum sucks. My point? I received absolutely no help on here. Still got mixed signals?
what seems clear is i come on here asking for help and get no help at all. Come to find out i think i know more then you guys. Now you 50 cent come in the discussion with totally useless comments. You havent had a single comment about my actual problem. You should leave this thread please....
This is one of those post and run users...Use and dispose.
and no i wont post and run. I will stick around to give others some advice because apparently you guys arent very knowledgeable in car mechanics. As i said i am a new honda owner. I was trying to find a good forum to join as a new honda owner. So you have no idea what your talking about. 50 cent? Thats about how much knowledge you can contribute. 50 cents worth.

If you really think you are more knowledge than "these guys" why don't you head over to my thread? I'm still waiting for some help.
50 cents worth is way more than what you're worth. so, what's the problem?

so why don't you leave?
damn do you have abandonment issues or something? I been a member for 3 damn days how many posts should i have??? And yes going by the lack of advice i got and the fact i fixed it myself it does make me have a tendency to think i do. And the fact you didnt even respond in this post until the problem was fixed. You had nothing to say until after the fact....

i dont know. A shop would have charged upwards to about 500 bucks to fix my car. So 500 bucks? Thats more then 50 cents btw. If i do leave its because of rude people on here. Maybe try another place with more friendly people.

You volunteered that the timing belt was installed incorrectly previously after Matt theorized that might be the issue which means he was right and you're crying that you were given bad advice ? He specifically said "If it jumped a bunch of teeth", which, if it did jump a bunch of teeth it likely would have ate some valves.
Nothing incorrect about his post since he was speaking hypothetically based on the information you have provided. Just because he wasn't right doesn't mean he was wrong.

All my advice? That was hardly advice towards fixing the problem. All I could glean from your original post, was that you mentioned the timing belt had jumped some teeth in the past. I was just trying to warn you about the potential problems that could have occurred from that. I didn't go into a ton of depth, because I was trying to create a dialog and hope to guide you in a direction to solving the problem. But, hey... if you think that's "crappy advice", far be it for me to change your opinion. And, if you think sarcasm is an easy concept to understand through emotionless text... you're a bit naive.
