98 Civic LX trouble
Hello everyone,
First of all, sorry if this is in the wrong place.
I'm having some trouble with my honda. At first, it started idling a bit weird. When driving in town, the car would seem to kind of "flutter" when it was about to change gears, but giving it a bit more gas seemed to stop the issue.
Last friday, on my way home, it sputtered and died and the stoplight. (idling for a bit)I was able to start it back up, but pressing on the gas did nothing, as it pretty much just rolled forward. A few times it worked, only to die as soon as I got it going a bit. Eventually it stopped starting all together, and I had to push it home.
Saturday, my father and I decide to try and fix it. We first removed the fuel filter (good) and checked fuel pressure by turning the key to the ON position. Good there. We bought a cheapo code scanner, which told us it was the evap system. From google, we decided to check the charcoal canister (?) and the purge valve. My little brother has a similar model, so we took the canister off of his and tried it instead. No luck.
We eventually got her started by replacing the spark plugs. (The old ones were wet, and kind of sooty). It idles normal, but when driving the car, if you press on the gas with anything but the LIGHTEST TOUCH it starts to sputter and die. We were able to drive around the block with my father babying the gas pedal, but when we got stuck at a light it died again.
Someone suggested checking the MAP sensor. Also had someone on reddit recommended testing the distributor as well. That is my plan tonight when I get off work. Any other suggestions?
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

You're going to need a system if you want any hope of fixing this yourself. I'd start with this:
It's for cranking no-starts, but you should be able to use the basic concept to develop a plan of attack for poor performance.
