Default bad millage for civic 98 LX

hi HT,

i own a 98 civic lx, i'm getting very bad gas millage in my car, i dont have any codes, i do my maintenance regularly, did change my fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, cleaned my injectors but still i get like 180miles for the full tank.

my automatic tranny is slipping on the 2nd and 3rd gear so i guessed maybe its the problem, i drive normally and never speed in my car.

plz help

When I first got my car, I used to get that kind of mileage. I'd get 160-180 miles per tank. Changing the o2 sensor bumped up my gas mileage to about an extra 100 miles per tank. A bad o2 sensor won't always give you a code.

I recently failed my smog test and had a new o2 sensor installed. It runs a lot better and has saved me a couple of bucks since a week ago.

"Miles per tank" is a nearly useless figure for comparison unless you keep painstaking records from previous fill-ups.

"Miles per gallon" or "kilometers per liter" are universal and far more accurate units for comparing fuel economy, especially across multiple types of vehicles. It eliminates fuel tank size, gauge accuracy, reading uncertainty, and works for any distance driven. It's also simple to calculate:

1. Fill the tank completely until the pump stops
2. Reset the trip odometer
3. Drive
4. Fill the tank completely until the pump stops
5. Note the volume of fuel pumped on the meter
6. Note the distance driven on the trip odometer
7. Divide distance driven by fuel volume consumed

All fuel-injected Hondas have at least one oxygen sensor.

You can't have closed-loop electronic fuel injection without an oxygen sensor.

What sort of MPG are you getting?

Because there is only one oxygen sensor on an OBD-1 Civic, and it's not in the converter.

That's not MPG.

Depending on how bad it is, a slipping transmission could put a dent in fuel economy, but not likely a large one.

Pump 85-87 octane fuel, do what Targa250R suggested in his first post and get back with us on how many MPG you are actually getting, without this information we cannot seriously help you.
