Default 93 Honda Del Sol A/T Gear position switch problem

Hopefully I don't get yelled at again by someone but I can't find my answer. When I turn my key on the shift lock, interlock, gear position I don't know what it's called too many people want to call it something different will click and when I press the brake nothing happens and can't shift into gear. I looked at all the fuses no luck there, I took the brake pedal switch out and tried playing with that and put a paper clip in it's place still no luck. Far as I can tell the pedal switch is working like it is supposed to. Am I missing something? I would like to find a wire diagram on it but all I can find is parts blow ups. I have no check engine nor brake lights on. My cruise does not work either but that's a different question of it's own.

I thought I should state that when I move the lock and put it in gear if I was to drive it, it acts like I'm still in park and rev limiter kicks in between 2000 and 3000 RPM

Do the brake lights on the back of the car come on when you step on the pedal?

If you push a key in the slot on the side of the shifter to bypass the lock, and shift it into gear, does the car go?

I can provide you the interlock system for a 92-95 civic. I believe it should be pretty close to the Sol.

On the brake pedal I think there might be two switches, one is for the brake lights while the other is for the interlock circuit. The one on the seat side should be the interlock while the one on the firewall side should be for the brake lights.

Then there is the interlock solenoid under the shift lever center console cover.

If it's working properly, with the car on, if you put your head down by the pedal and push the brake pedal in by hand, you should hear clicking at the center console (was just listening to this a couple days ago on my wife's 93 civic). If you don't hear clicking when you push in the brake pedal then there is a problem with the interlock brake switch, the wiring or the interlock solenoid on the shift lever.

Let me know if you want the FSM pages for the interlock on the 5th gen civic. It may not be exact but I suspect it's pretty similar.

And I would like to apologize for someone hollering at you and will take a moment to thank you for attempting to search out your answer first. We will do our best to assist.

Yes, the brake lights work just fine. I can put it in gear using my key but if I was to drive it, it acts like I'm in park still and the rev limiter kicks in.

I have my whole car apart right now looking for a solution but I had many other things to do as well but this one is preventing me from getting it reinspected in the state of VA. The is one switch on an automatic at the pedal but it's different than one on a manual. Automatics have a 4 prong where a manual has a 2 prong. What seat side switch are you talking about. It's possible that I may have that one but dunno. The solenoid at the center console which is visible to me now cause I took the panels off, will move when I turn the key on but if a press the brake nothing will happen. If you have a diagram I'll take a look I'm good with schematics to where I can bypass everything if I can.

Yeah thanks I had an issue on my last post where I looked and couldn't find anything and some guy cussed me out for not looking cause he found the answer with a simple Google search which I did and couldn't find anything.

I will take a picture of the 93 civic brake pedal when I get home (automatic).

It sounds like on the Sol they compounded the switches into 1 switch.

On the civic if I remember right, one switch while the pedal is in home position will keep the switch pin depressed (interlock circuit) and the other switch on the firewall side, the pin only gets depressed when the brake is pushed (brake lights).

They probably used a double switch in place of the two switches on the Sol.

Being you get nothing from the solenoid when you depress the brake, the issue lies there. The solenoid is getting power as it "locks" when you turn the key.

When you depress the brake pedal, that is supposed to activate the solenoid to "unlock" so you can shift into gear based on the interlock portion of the brake pedal switch.

Also once I am home, I will post up the pages but it does sound a bit different than the Sol. You may have to manually trace wires as the color coding may be different too.

I'd be more concerned right now that the car does not go even when the handle is on drive or reverse. Does the speedometer go up when you try to move? Is the shift cable moving the lever on the transmission properly? Can you shift out of park with the engine off and move the car by pushing it? Is it also prevented from rolling when the handle is on park?

I'm not sure bypassing the interlock with the key actually shifts the transmission info Drive/Reverse etc.

If it does, then you are absolutely correct as then it's a transmission issue.

The reason I question that is there is also an interlock control unit and I don't know if it will prevent the transmission from going into gear if you bypass the solenoid.

Can you confirm or deny that thought?

It should, that is why they bothered to provide a bypass mechanism-- so you can drive the car if there is something wrong with the interlock.

For the interlock system this is for the 92-95 civic but it may help you with your Sol:

The other thought then is, could the cable be maladjusted?

@TomCat39 Thanks for checking and getting pics. Yeah I'm unsure how the switch works exactly. I took the sensor out and when I press and depress it by hand the lights cut on and off but the solenoid does not. Then I tried unhooking and using paperclips and wire and I can't get the lights to cut on so that made me real curious how this switch works exactly. Tried 2 clips and wire in all 4 and can't get the lights or solenoid to work then I plug the switch back in and the lights come on, confusing.

I'd be more concerned right now that the car does not go even when the handle is on drive or reverse. Does the speedometer go up when you try to move? Is the shift cable moving the lever on the transmission properly? Can you shift out of park with the engine off and move the car by pushing it? Yeah the speedometer and everything works but if I was to accelerate anywhere from medium to pedal to metal the rev limiter kicks in. If I was to granny it, it will shift through all the gears just fine. Once I release the lock by hand I can shift it into any gear fine and back to Park with no issue just have to release again by hand. I could probably deal with this if I didn't need my state inspection done and don't think it would be good to tell the inspector to press the solenoid back to go forward lol.

It's interesting that the brake pedal isn't noted in the circuit on the FSM but the first page states, prevents shifting out of park unless the brake pedal is depressed......

Go figure!

You can use an digital multimeter on resistance setting to test the switch on the brake pedal. Looking at the FSM for the civic, they only show the one switch for the brake lights so it quite likely is the same 4 pin you have.

I don't have my ETM handy as it's in storage so I can't get the more detailed schematics of the circuitry right now.

Looking at the first page schematic, is your shift solenoid wires yellow and yellow/black? If it is, try grounding the yellow black from the solenoid to ground and see if it clicks. If it does, then there is a problem with the interlock control unit or the wiring there after.

No worries, just remember that these are for the 92 Civic specifically so it may not be exact as your Del Sol.

I also bought the Electrical Troubleshooting Manual (ETM) for the 93 Civic but it's packed away.

If you plan on keeping your Sol awhile, you will want to visit helminc.com and see about buying both the service manual and the ETM for your Del Sol. The Sol was neglected back in the day for ppl scanning the helms manuals and uploading them online back in the day so there really isn't much out there on the interwebs for them. But Helmsinc.com still sells the manuals that Factory Service Techs use to work on the cars.

Best of luck tomorrow!

OK I checked everything and it seems to be good but I figured it out. Nothing was working but I had my car idling while I was installing the brake pedal switch back in. I tried it again and it worked fine cut it off back on still worked hmm okay? Tried it in the morning no good again oh gosh wtf? Let the car idle again after a while it started working. Found out it was idling too high and it made it not work and after it warmed up a little even though its 90 degrees outside it works like its supposed to. So I adjusted the TPS and now it works fine but I still have a problem with the rev limiter kicking in. If I rev any faster than granny it kicks in and if I floor it I have no power and won't go over 3K RPMs. Should I make a new post for this issue?

Might as well, this one is title Gear Position and has nothing really to do with your rev limit idling issues.

You might create a thread titled something like, "93 Del Sol Trials and Tribulations". Then any problem with your Sol can be tackled in the one thread.

Or we can rename this one to something of the like, you just have to let me know.

Yeah I went ahead and started a new thread. I think I know whats wrong but I'm not 100% sure and there may be a walk around. Here is the link.
