Within the past week a rattle noise has started when I first pull out of my parking space. It is not there while the car is idling after starting. It's a light rattle/ticking that goes faster with speed, slows with deceleration & then goes away. I hear it loudest with the window cracked & it bounces off the sidewalk curbs and parked cars. There are no engine lights on. What can this be?

 

What is the frequency of the noise?

Does it change with vehicle speed, or with engine speed?

Regarding frequency, It happens after the car has been sitting parked for awhile. Has been as little as a half an hour or as long as all night. I believe the sound increases with vehicle speed as opposed to engine speed, only because I do not hear the sound while standing still. The car must be moving.

 

just curious, why did you post this in this forum? how did you come across honda tech? im asking because you and many other first time posters seem to choose this 88-91 Civic/CRX forum to post random non-88-91 civic questions. and youre one of the very few that have actually come back to respond to your own question. im just trying to figure it out in order to help more helpful.

i hope your problem is solved. maybe its some hub ring loose, not sure if 2008 civics even have that...

 

I found this web site by googling my problem. A link popped up and sent me here. I have never posted on a site like this before. I was hoping at the beginning that there was just a rock that had flown up and stuck somewhere underneath or maybe a twig. But I didn't see anything when I looked with a flashlight. And since it has continued and is more pronounced I think there's a problem. Hopefully I will make it thru the 4th of July holiday. But thanks for the info, every little bit helps.

 

By frequency I mean like, how many times per second would you guess you hear it at low speed, high speed, etc.

If it's linked to vehicle speed, it's probably wheel, brake, or axle related.

Try jacking up the car and spinning the wheels by hand to see if you hear the noise and can articulate where it's coming from. If not, maybe rotate the tires (swap corner to corner) and see if it changes. If not, inspect brake pads and rotors for wear.
