Hey everyone.
I finally got around to trimming the videos from the Open Lapping event I went to on May 22, 2017 at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (Driver Development Track). I captured on video the moment that the motor said goodbye to this world...
My car is a 1993 Honda Civic del Sol Si. It had an NA built d16z6 making 158whp (Mustang Dyno). The transmission is a 5-speed S40B000 with a Quaife LSD, MFactory 3rd gear, stock 3rd to 4th, short 5th and a Synchrotech carbon synchro rebuild kit.
I was chasing a 4-door Honda Civic Si (K20) down a slight right stretch. I attempted to upshift into 3rd and missed the gate. I over-revved the motor and you can hear a "clunk". That's the exact moment that the exhaust valve broke at the neck in cylinder two. Of course I simply thought I missed the gate, put it into 3rd and attempted to accelerate. Little did I know that I was destroying the head and chewing a hole through the piston. The video ends with an anti-climactic roll into the grass.
Enjoy!

Sorry to hear about the single cam, I usually catch your updates on jdmrides.ca but it's been pretty dead over there lately.

Not yet! Maybe soon...
Hey Ontariorider.
I haven't posted there in a while. I typically post in Honda-tech or d-series.org. I actually have a spare motor sitting in the garage. It's an OBD2 JDM D15B with a y8 head swap. I've had it sitting there for the last two years. I bought it when I spun a rod bearing on the z6 when it was stock. I decided instead the build the z6. End result was an healthy 158whp. Unfortunately I made a fatal error in not replacing the valves with aftermarket ones. I thought the OEM valves would be able to handle the increased compression and heat. Turns out one of the exhaust valves couldn't...
I'm going to drop in the d15/y8 since I have it. Right now I just want a running motor to get back onto the track. I have a spare z6 head that I may get ported and polished and put the Rocket Motorsports stage-4 camshaft, valve springs and Ti retainers in. I also have RDX injectors that I haven't been able to use yet. I'll be happy with around 140-150whp - for now.... I don't need a ton of power to get around a track. Keeping good lines and maintaining speed is what makes a car fast. If I wanted to be fast in a straight line I would go for more power, but corners are way more fun.
