Default Transmission oil

Has anyone used redline lightweight shock proof oil in their transmissions? If not what would be good to use in one making 800 horsepower

Yes, I currently run it as do many. It's a good lubricant if you have dog engagement, however if you don't, I wouldn't run it personally I'd just run Honda MTF.

Hey Kevin, the combo you got from Darrin will work okay but you'll be better off with straight RTF. The 28's are going to eat through transmissions very quickly though.

Stock style trans, GM Synchromesh. Part number 104014. Been using the stuff for 10 years with no issues. Its been in my integra making 800hp on stock trans and getting 50+ passes out of it shifting at 10,000rpm. OEM honda MTF is garbage, and is made for newer trannys with tighter tolerances.

I wouldn't say Honda MTF is garbage. Seeing as many run it with no problems what so ever. The tolerances on the manual transmissions are the same as they were in the 80's.

Agree to disagree. I think its garbage, every car that comes into my shop with it, shifts terribly.

people beat the crap out of transmissions and grind the hell out of them...... it wouldn't matter what fluid they were running. Stupid is as stupid does.

Every car? Way to exaggerate.. Sounds like your shop is the common factor. I've worked for Honda/Acura for 14 years and haven't seen one instance of a car shifting terrible because of Honda mtf.

I second this. The old formula was way better, but still not as good as aftermarket fluids

I have seen it plenty of times. Sometimes its just because the fluid is old and broken down or dirty. But more often than not, new genuine honda mtf doesn't improve things much if at all, and then swapping to another brand oil more often than not makes it feel like a brand new tranny again. Or at least shows major improvement

I can attest to the newer MTF as being garbage on a fairly low HP street driven car. I'd change the fluid and the transmission was butter smooth, 3,000 miles it would get notchy and prone to locking me out of gears at higher RPM, I went through this doing 2,500 mile change intervals for awhile before going to GM Synchromesh. The GM Synchromesh would allow me to go to 5,000 mile intervals, which isn't terrible but it is when you look at people who go 30,000 miles on the same fluid. I then switched to the Torco MTF/RTF mix since my transmission didn't like full RTF, and I could go to my 10,000 mile intervals without a problem. I am tempted to try other fluids just to see how well they fare in comparison.

Cliff notes: Honda MTF doesn't last. GM Synchromesh lasts longer. Torco MTF/RTF is a godsend.

I'd be curious how Amsoil syncromesh holds up in your car

Likewise, but it states on Amsoil's website "not for use in vehicles with a limited slip".

Do they mean that only for clutch type limited slip diffs? I have an oem gear type diff and after reading this thread I want drain my Honda mtf and try amsoil syncromesh.

Have you ever ran straight Torco RTF? Reason for asking is because my transmission ran very good with the MTF/RTF mix but when I went straight to RTF shifting felt more notchy. I'm currently debating on whether or not I should go back to MTF/RTF.

If RTF made it feel notchy then you have worn parts in your trans. RTF in a trans that is in good condition will not feel notchy.

There have been multiple people with MFactory helical LSD's having issues with Amsoil MTF. One of them was a customer of mine. I rebuilt his trans and installed an MFactory helical LSD. He reported the issue immediately after installing the trans (car was jerking on turns as if the diff was welded). I pulled the LSD, and tore it down to find nothing wrong with it. Customer reported the same issue after reinstalling the trans. Had him drain it and try a different fluid. Problem solved.

So in other words, for every fluid someone is going to say another is better. Everyone has a magical success story by switching to their favorite fluid, and every other one they have a horror story on.

Torco and Motul are magical. Others are ok and many are crap. I have experience (building then inspecting/refreshing/rebuilding) in transmissions using every fluid as well as having had every fluid analyzed so my statements are not blind. I sell Torco because it is the best fluid available in the US. If a certain Motul was available here then I would offer it as well.

If you've had the fluid analyzed and have results, why not post it up? I'm sure many would like to know the facts behind why the fluid you sell is better than a Honda MTF. I've rebuilt many transmissions and in 14 years never seen any issues using Honda MTF and never had one or have shifting issues due to fluid. Until I see otherwise i'll continue to use it.
