I'm changing the engine in my Element. Can I do this in the garage using jack stands and engine hoist (removal from below)--Or will I have to pull it out the top? Thanks...

 

Depending upon if its automatic or manual determines removal method. If its a manual your gonna have to drop the cradle with engine and tranny on it, only due to the fact that you won't have enough room to clear the input shaft. If its automatic you can easily go through the top without having to really touch the tranny at all. It's actually not too bad, definitely doable at home. But if its manual your gonna need a lift forsure.
