Default Automatic Transmission Rebuild

Hey guys,

I decided to rebuild my M4TA transmission. Thus far, everything looks okay. Clearances are within spec etc. BUT, I'm having a hell of time trying to get one wire like snap ring back onto the mainshaft. When I removed it, it was recessed into a grove and the thrust washer that went over gave me just enough clearance to pry it out. I have the same clearance now but it's not enough to get it into the groove with the thrust washer in place. Below is a snip from the service manual and related parts. Got tips for this?

Well holy **** on a stick. The thrust washer has a up and down side. The up side has a chamferred inner edge that would allow the snap ring to seat properly in the groove. This transmission was rebuilt once and I placed the parts back the way they were removed. Apparently the dipsh!ts who reassembled this thing failed to note this themselves. I'm not sure if this lead to the failure of this transmission but it's going in the right way now!
