1996 accord EX transmission problem
I have a 1996 Honda Accord EX transmission not working. Here are all the symptoms, will go into drive for about 30 seconds then drop out. can hold it in reverse for over 5 minutes. turn car off for 45 seconds get drive back for another 30 seconds. NO check engine light, no codes, clean fluid and at proper level. replaced all 4 solinoids and the ECM/TCM. No local Honda dealer. what should I check next?

Pull your cooler hoses and run it to a bucket. Have someone Run the engine while you Make sure there is fluid flowing when in Drive.
It sounds very similar to my issue. - clogged strainer. Im in the middle of rebuilding mine. Everything else looked and checked out fine.

Re: 1996 accord EX transmission problem
Its kind of like flushing fluids, ya know? Make sure its full, dont run it for too long. Dont gas it much. Keep refilling.
if there is no fluid pumping out at any point, then either
bad torque converter
bad front pump on the transmission (internal)
bad regulator (internal) - including stuck/broken valves
clogged strainer
the most likely reason why you are able to put it back in drive after a period of time is because you are giving the materials that clog up your strainer a chance to fall from the strainer thus allowing fluid to flow when you start back up. After a short while, the strainer picks up the materials and gets clogged again which causes a no fluid charge condition. If its not the strainer, then maybe a fluid passage or another strainer on the main valve body is clogged.
Does your drain bolt have a magnet at the end? If so, did it catch any metal? If yes then I would worry about what got passed it and is now in your strainer - which i bet would be clutch material.
If its any of the above issues then you will need to consider a rebuild or get a replacement that is already rebuilt. Should be able to find one at a decent cost that comes with warranty. Whatever the cause, this serriously sounds like you need to open the transmission and have a look yourself. Im sure you can source a service manual online which you can use as a guide for best practices and specifications.
Im no transmission expert and i have only read the transmission section of the service manual (97 crv 4wd) to get a better understanding of how this thing works. Theres actually a section that lists symtoms and what to check for. After reading it a few dozen times i still dont fully understand but confident that I can open this thing up and put it back together. This forum doesnt seem to get a lot of replies on automatic transmissions so I hope the info I have given to you is somewhat helpful.
