Camshaft and and pulley not aligned?? Need help
Ok so here's what i did. I had to replace the cam seal. So what I did was I zip tied my timing belt to the pulley so I wouldnt lose its position. Then I removed the valve cover. Once I began to remove my camcage I believe my whole cam rotated. Not by by much but it did move. So now I know that my cam and the pulley it's self are not aligned. So in return if I try to do my timing isn't that going to be off? Or am I missing something here? I tried once to fire it and I could tell it was off. And I've been researching for hours. Did I do something wrong? And before I start bending rods and **** I need to know how to fix this. Hopefully I explained it enough to the point where you guys understand. I've leaned a lot from this site so I'm hoping this does the trick
If I'm reading your post right, you're worried about the camshaft pulley being out of position on the camshaft. Right?
The camshaft and the pulley are keyed together- there's only one position where they will fit, ASSUMING you got the key back in there and the key isn't sheared.
That key seems to be really fond of falling down in the open maw of the timing belt cover, If you didn't put it back in and don't have it, I'd start looking there. You definitely don't want that thing floating around in there.
And you definitely do not want to run that engine again if you don't have the pulley keyed onto the camshaft.

If you did not remove the bottom timing belt cover already do that. Align the crankshaft gear to the mark, align the camshaft gear to the marks. This is the safest things to do.
Good luck,

Can we back up- CRANKshaft is at the bottom, CAMshaft is up by the valves.
Just to make sure we're helping you with the right problem: When you say the key is not there- how did you determine that? Are the key slots in the shaft and pulley not lined up?
And you started with changing the camshaft seal by pulling off the pulley off the camshaft, correct?
A new key is like $4 from Honda dealer, but the other big issue is- you need to find that key and make sure it's not in the timing belt area or among the valve springs.
I'm somewhat surprised that you could start and run without that key, and didn't massively slip the pulley and crash a valve.

and hey- how'd the head gasket turn out? Was the head flat within spec?- You should go post the outcome on your original post, just to close the loop. (if it's closed)
