Default Opinions on building a d16y7 motor??

I have a bone stock 99 civic ek hatch with a d16y7 motor in it and I'm planning on building the motor and turboing it but I'm not sure where to start. Car is still automatic so I also want to swap the trans over to manual.

You should reconsider your options before spending any money/time on this project.

It will be an expensive endeavor if you'll want it to actually last or be fast at all, but if it makes sense to you vs. getting a better engine swap since you'll already have to tear yours out- then power to ya (I budget-rebuilt my y7 and Manual swapped, and y8 swapped it last year after I replaced my EJ6 with a new daily, and am Turbo'ing it this year- causing a few arguments with the wife hehe)

First priorities if you want to actually drive it, should always be brakes; real coilovers; and just refreshing your suspension + steering components depending on your mileage (I assume high) then deal with the motor and trashing the auto

but as in other threads, what is the end-goal purpose of the build (drag/autocross/daily/fun weekend grocery-getter)? can't say too much without that as power-goal dictates what level of parts to get and how much cash you'll have to throw at it

its going to be my daily for a while. I'd be happy with 200hp. Do you recommend just swapping a different and better motor in? Will it be cheaper if I do that?

It would be cheaper and more reliable to swap in a B18C1/B18C5 (GSR/Type R) into your vehicle.

180-200hp with bolt ons and a tune, or 300HP with a reliable turbo kit and tune.

Figure 4k to convert the car to manual and swap the motor, another 3k for the turbo kit and install/tuning..

You'd still be keeping your A/C with that estimate too.

Also, D series engines will handle about 200hp before needing to upgrade rods, sleeving the motor, etc...transmissions top out about 350-400hp before you start snapping gears and needing to get a built one.

It is MUCH more cost effective to swap in a B series.

I'd even say spend a bit more, swap in a K series which is even more mod friendly...

I was thinking about the same thing for my 97 ek sedan I might throw a vtec head and turbo it. This spring just for the hell of it and then just rock that until it's dead then do a swap.
