Default Fast 70hp motor

I just bought an 93 hatchback cx automatic and it has an d15b7 is this a stock motor for this model year? Because it feels a bit fast for having 70hp.

If it's using the P06 ECU then it's correct for a DX model, which should be about 20 more hp. If it's still using the P05 ECU then I don't know what it would be making. Also there's an off chance it's just using the block but still retaining the 8 valve head. You'd need to verify.

If it is a Canadian Domestic Market CX it would be the D15B7 and P06 ECU stock.

As 24TEN mentioned, if it's a US Domestic Market CX and has the D15B7 engine, check the ECU to see if it's the P06 ECU to be sure the swap is complete.

Also I would pull the valve cover to verify it indeed has 16 valves. I'm not sure if the 8 valve and 16 valve (D15B8 vs D15B7) covers fit the same. I've not had the pleasure of seeing the D15B8 engine in person.

so it is a swapped motor? Thats what i was wondering. Feels a bit fast for a 70 hp . So its a 102hp motor. Will check tomorrow the ecu.

Not necessarily.

Plug your VIN into a decoder and it should indicate if it's a CDM or USDM car.

It could also be a CDM car imported into the USA.

Or plug your vin into torontohondaparts online catalog. I think it will verify it's a CDM car if it is.

It's not a Canadian market car, it's an American market car that was made in Canada. The VIN in the 1992 model year doesn't differentiate between CX/DX, but we know it's a DX because that 7 digit serial number below your engine code matches the VIN on your car. Even without the serial number/VIN knowledge, it looks like a DX because the CX has a single wire O2 sensor which your car does not have and it doesn't appear to have any wiring changes done. The CX also has a throttle body mounted MAP sensor and your car appears to have had a firewall mounted MAP sensor for quite some time. There's other subtle differences that make it appear to be a DX.

Now, you may have noticed that I wrote 1992 instead of 1993. In 1993, they did differentiate sub-model by VIN in which case the CX would have a 5 in the trim level. I'll explain....

2HG2EH2449PH015546
2 = Canada
H = Honda
G = Passenger Car
EH2 = 1.5L Civic 3 door
4 = Automatic Transmission
4 = DX/CX in 1992, but DX in 1993. (CX for 1993 is a 5)
9 = blank
P = Vehicle model year: 1993
H = Manufacture plant location: Alliston, Canada
0155446 = Production number: Your vehicle was the 155,446th EH2 produced that year.

So, the reason you have a D15B7 is because your car is actually a DX. The reason it shows up as a CX in VIN look up databases is because those databases are all based off of the first year in each generation in which case yours would be either CX or DX and since C comes before D, the C shows up as default. Typically, a car company isn't going to change a VIN layout every god damned year, but in Honda's case, they did just that (The VIN designation changed again in 1994).

I hope that answers your questions.

^Good information here, but this thread sure was a lot of noise just to tell OP that his 26 year old Honda has a stock "fast" D15... lol

Gonna have to remember this going forward.

Would think the databases would be a lot cleaner. Good to know.

Don't bother with vin look up databases to expect precise info. Got it.

Just for future reference, the original B8 valve cover fits exactly the same but has the "H" and Honda Motor Co on it only, no 16 valve marking. Also the intake plenum, throttle body, and intake tube are SIGNIFICANTLY thinner. You'll know one when you see one hahaha (looks like a VX/Z1 set up without an EGR port).

Okay so it is possible to slap a DX valve cover on a CX head and vice versa. Unlike the B7/B8 cover on the Z6 head, just doesn't work. That's where my line of thinking was going. Still have to pull the cover and verify the head to be sure it's not a franken motor in disguise.

Can't say I know what you mean on this one either. Canada only has the DX styled Hatch backs for both the CX and DX 92-95. Are you talking the side strips on the fenders and doors?

Okay so I did get it. Thanks. I always thought people removed the moulding as stock I believe it's just moulding quality double sided tape. Then cleaned the glue off the paint.

Here in BC Canada, they all have the molding regardless if it's a CX or DX. Will have to pay closer attention to the VX when I see one driving around to see.

the moulding is held in with clips. removal would require welding/grinding/bondo. some other cars have just tape, mk3 golf/jetta come to mind

Ummmm, I haven't found evidence of that except in some aftermarket front fenders up here in BC.

I haven't tried removing the trim from the door but I also haven't see the square holes for the body clips when I've had my door card off either like I have seen for the fender trim on some fenders (usually has aftermarket tag inside it).

Next time I'm out in the yard, I'll try some doors and back panels for fun.

Looking on torontohondaparts online catalog for the CX they show the door panel skin available w/o holes.

I'm thinking up here in Canada, they took the CX without holes and glued/taped the trim in place.

While the DX probably matches what you displayed. So both CX and DX have trim but not the same trim. And that would also explain why I have found both types of trim on the front fenders.

I can verify this by taking the door cards off both my car (CDM CX) and my wife's car (CDM DX). I need to lubricate the window slides anyway so might as well.

CX/VX didn't come with side molding here or in the US. I have seen lots of CX/VXs with aftermarket stick on side molding, but they didn't leave the factory that way.

Good to know.

Seems my CDM CX has had a few extras done back in it's day. A nice flip up sunroof added as well as stick on side moldings.
