I'm mainly just wondering what is the best metal choice for connecting rods, turbo capable later on but I want the rotational mass lowered enough to gain power, but I also want rods strong enough to handle at least 500 horsepower eventually, the rods are for the JDM B18C the one that hits above 9k RPMs so that's a factor to look at too I guess, any help is appreciated! Is aluminum strong enough to handle 500hp reliably? Or is titanium a more suitable choice for that much strength while still lowering weight.

 

Will this be a street driven car or a drag race/road race car ??? If you intend to street drive it at all, the aluminum rod is a bad choice... so Titanium would be the one that would be dramatically lighter than the stock rod. They will be pricey... a more affordable rod would be a Crower Max Lite billet or a BC lightweight... these are about 100 grams lighter than the stock rods.

 

I like BC lightweights myself.

 

Carrillo Pro-A

 

All the top sfwd and all motor cars are using aluminum rods. There are different designs to accommodate each tho, so you probably shouldn't use an all motor aluminum rod in a boosted engine. Their is more prep work and maintenance that goes along with them so if you plan on this being any form of street car stick to a steel rod. That said, people do street drive aluminum rod motors. I'll be doing it occasionally. The prices aren't bad either. Cheaper than a Carrillo pro h with CARR bolts and comparable to a Manley turbo tuff.

They seem like more trouble than they're worth, not to mention I can't find actual weights listed anywhere.

The Pro-As are 410 grams and will hold a 300whp N/A build all day.

Not to mention, there's zero maintenance.

Holding the aluminum in one hand and a Manley h beam I was previously going to use in the other, the weight difference isn't drastic but noticeable. But my hand scales probably aren't the most accurate.

4piston Luke talked me out of the pro A for what I was building the engine for. I wasnt going to take any chances.

 

Oh yeah, you're probably going to be WELL over 300whp which is I believe the max you'd want to run on them. They say the Pro-A can take 400 hp at the flywheel, but I heard 360whp was snapping them.

I know Luke has been a big aluminum rod supporter for years. He knows far better than I what these big K motors need.

 

I raise you one with the Pro SA rod from Carillo. Bigger rod bolts and still lighter than any H beam.
