Default Fan cycling on/off & now Code P0420 catalyst...

The fan for the A/C at the radiator keeps cycling on/off while driving with no A/C on and now the MIL came on with code P0420. I've read that a malfunctioning coolant temp switch, which also controls fan, could also cause that code? Any other advice please, I would like to TRY to fix myself so I don't have to go to mechanic... THANKS!
