Just took into dealer,said we had a number 5 burnt intake valve,2200 to repair,includes head machine work and valves.It doesn't use a a lot of oil but it still half to three qtr quart low between 5000 mile oil changes.We had a fouled number 3 plug last year but they replaced that,said this was not covered under the extended warranty that last thru 2016.
What could have been the cause and dies price sound right.

i think when this is fixed we are getting rid of it,would like to find out what year is the most reliable.

A number of things could have cause this so it is hard to say.

Since part of the engine is already apart, not sure how much more the timing belt job will cost. I would guess a fair price for a timing belt job from the DEALER would be in the ~$900 range but again that is from a car that is all together. Again since some of the work has already been done to get the head off, you shouldn't have to pay the full amount.

I would go ahead and ask that they adjust the valves on the "other" head....again they are 3/4 of the way there so the added charge should not be that much

 

Head was machined and new valve.
They want another 480 to adjust valves on rear head,is it that nessasery,
they are changing timing belt though.

 

Just me but $480 to adjust the valves on one of the heads when the thing is already torn apart - I tell the service manger he can pound sand.....or play nice and ask for a DETAILED explanation/break down of the cost. Don't take a total labor hour(s) cost, ask for the detail break down and description of the labor hours. Look for anything like "remove intake manifold" - the damn thing is already off because the one head had to come off. I'll end my rant but to me that is too much to adjust valves on one head when they are in the middle of replacing the other already. For giggles call another dealer and ask for a quote on adjusting the valves, compare that to the $480.

Do they need adjustment, simple answer is yes. Over time the clearance can get out of spec and has the potential to cause issues.....like a burnt valve.

 

I asked for a break down,I'm waiting,if I spent the 1500 extra that it looks like it going to be for timing belt and getting all valves adjusted would this thing be worth keeping?it looks to be worth about 7500-8500 and is a real clean car,if it would last anothe 2-3 years it would pay for itself but we put 25000 miles a year on it,just don't know if it will last,plus extended warranty is up this month.
Or cut my losses,just pay the 500 for the head work,don't get timing belt done and save myself 1500 and sale or trade it in?

 

Probably burned that valve because the valves were not adjusted. Better to get the rear cylinders adjusted than to do it all over again.

 

Agree, that is why I'm suggesting as best I can to have the others adjusted.

I'm just trying to give information that might help you reduce the cost of the work. Again, remember you are asking for the "other" valves to be adjusted.....the head being replaced, you are already paying for them to be adjusted as it is part of the "job" they are already doing. Simple terms, the extra work is to remove the other three coils, then the valve cover, adjust the valves....they are going to have to spin the engine and adjust the replacement heads valves.

Again, to me, $480 to adjust the vales on ONE head doesn't sound right. Sounds more like you are paying full price like no work is already being done and adjusting the valves on BOTH heads. Like I said, call another dealer and get a quote for adjusting the valves - don't mention anything, just tell them you want the valves adjusted and see what they quote. I very well could be wrong, I'm just thinking that sounds high based upon the work already being done.....that would mean the full price for adjusting the valves is ~$960

 

You mentioned an extended warranty that is still in effect. Who is the warranty provided through, and what reason did the dealer give you for denighing the repair?

 

It is the Honda extended warrernty for the oil consumption issue,warrernty is for 1-4 cyl and not 5-6 cylinders if I'm not mistaken..

 

Ahh; that makes sense.

 

We charge around $900 including taxes for that job.
