Sorry, not trying to sound like a dick, but you have the crank pulley off when trying to put the key in, right?
And you have the key positioned correctly, right?
Correct key, right? (Some are flat, some have a half moon on one side).

is the key rectangular or semi-circle?
If the key is rectangular, and appears to have a "notch" or something, that means the key is damaged, and you should just buy a new key. Check the slot in the crank and the crank pulley for damage too.
Also, if the key is semi-circle, you need to install it with the pulley off. If the key is rectangular, you can install it with the pulley on or off.
