Default D16 eco stroker build questions

Good afternoon. I'm a super newbie on the site, but a long time enthusiast and part time lurker. I don't even know if I'm posting in the right section so please correct me if I'm not. I'm currently researching a build I'd like to throw into an 88 crx that I originally bought for a turbo build. I've done some searching and found a lot of information but I'd like to know if my build sounds fairly complete. The build would be as such. D16 block, d17 crank, d16 rods, z1 head (just milled enough to ensure flatness), along with z1 pistons and ecu, all mated to a crx hf trans. The idea is to build for torque in order to maximize lean burn from the vx ecu. frankenfuellie ftw! Does this build sound doable? Thanks in advance.

Start posting up all the specs you are finding that indicates this will work. You know, things like deck height, main journal sizes, rod length, piston compression height, stroke etc etc.

No one is going to look up all the specs for you just to say yes or no to your question. However if you start actually discussing the specs, people may notice and point out challenges you will face etc.

He probably read an old build thread on d-series where some did a d16/d17 build.

On the zeal compression calculator it looks like I'll end up at about 10:1 compression with a ml hg, which is only half a point higher than the d15z1 stock CR.

in most cases you match the crank to the rods, unless your changing something like compression height of the piston(wrist pin height) or blocks/deck height. Not familiar with D series myself.

This is precisely why I suggested OP post up all the specs of all the parts OP is considering. As Pyro mentioned. The rods and crank have to match and by that match in journal size and width.

In example, the D16Z6 rods will not fit the D15B7 or D15B8 or the D15B2 crank. As well, the D16Z6 crank won't fit any of those D15 blocks I mentioned.

There might be very similar challenges with the D17 Crank and the D16 Block. Or D16 rods and D17 crank.

Until specs can be stated and compared, this thread is pointless.

As a general rule from the info Ive gathered the D16 and D17 cranks share the same size main bearing diameters. D16 and D17 rods all have the same major dimensions. The d15z1 rods are the same length as the 16/17 rods from what Ive read. this is why i started this thread as i am unsure if this combination will work and I'm having difficulty finding exact dimensions of everything. if someone has a link with measurements that pertain to this build id be most appreciative.

standard d17 piston compression height is 27mm according to what i just read. p07 piston compression height is 27.75mm. does this mean ill have 3/4mm of piston sticking up out of the cylinder?

If you did only a straight piston swap, yes.

Might try and look around the all motor section. There were a few sohc builds going on in there from people who seem to have some pretty good experience/knowledge with D series combos...

D17 have narrower rod journal width than d16 so you need to use the matching d17 rods

17 and 16 rods are the same length from what I've researched, so d17 rods it is. i think a little work around the piston edges in combination with a ml hg should net me the clearance in need right? i have an engine builder and machinist who lives 3 houses down from me, not that hes going to do anything for free, but im sure he could sort that much out for me.

thats kind of what i was tring to avoid.....i want to ust taKE THE rods, bolt them in, and not have to F with any clearance work......

This right here prevents the rod swap.

I kinda figured something like that would be an issue.

Honda did the same sort of variance between the D15B2/7/8 and the D16Z6 motors. But with them it was different journal diameter sizes which prevented both crank swapping AND rod swapping.

You're in for way more than taking it apart and slapping things back on. Here's a hint, rods need to match the crank like previously posted. There is a much longer shopping list for what you're trying to achieve. Google is your friend.

d17 crank
d17 rods and pistons
d17 oil pump
d17 timing cog and crank pulley
d17 timing belt
d16 obd1/0 block
d16 oil pan and pick up for d16 block
d16 rear main seal
d16 head
d16 intake manifold
d16 header
d16 or d17 rear main seal
