08 Odyssey failed smog/blue smoke
2008
90K miles
I took my Honda Odyssey in for a smog check. It passed all of the emissions tests, except the visual "snap test". They let it idle for 3 minutes, and rev the engine. There should be no smoke, but I am getting blue smoke (burning oil).
I tried the easy thing to do first. Replaced the PCV valve, and I ran seafoam through the air intake to clean out any residual oil. I re-tested, and it is a lot better now, but still has some smoke, and failed the test a 2nd time.
I know this can be caused by a valve seal, or piston rings. Is there anything else that could be causing this, and are there any suggestions on how to diagnose it?
I haven't noticed increased oil consumption. I have had the car since it was 3 years old, and it has always used about 1 quart between oil changes. I pulled the spark plugs, and I don't see anything obvious. The front right and aft right spark plugs are darker than the rest, but not all gummed up.

Thanks for any help in advance.

I saw that owners have had issues with the VCM causing oil burning, and that there was even a class action lawsuit regarding that. My understanding is that not all Odysseys have the VCM system. I have a base model, and when I called Honda to ask about the technical service bulletin that reprograms the VCM, they told me that does not apply to my van.
I don't know your OCI. Do you run it until the MM reads 0%? How many miles per OCI?
1 qt per OCI is really not bad oil consumption.
Have you checked your coolant? No sign of the SMOD? (strawberry milkshake of death.. which comes when the radiator/tranny fitting fails and coolant and tranny fluid mix catastrophically).
Does the tranny fluid look and smell normal?
Oil is the only thing that comes to mind regarding blue smoke.

I do run it until it reads 0%. Seems to be about 4-6K miles between oil changes. The tranny fluid looks normal. I haven't checked inside the radiator, but the radiator overflow fluid looks normal.

If all fail and you don't want to put up an expensive repair, put it up for sale outside of your state. Not all states require this smog check.

I had the dealership check it out, and they could not get it to smoke. Either the smoke was from residual oil in the intake that got in before I changed the PCV valve, or maybe the smog shop was just being overly picky. It was definitely smoking before I change the PCV valve, but I was surprised they failed it after replacing it because it was a ton better after the parts change.
