93 del sol - trying to replace the trunk/gas release lever
So, I'm trying to replace the Trunk/gas release lever on my 93 del sol. (To provide an interior trunk release)
Got the mechanism from a 97 body...check
Removed the old (and new) inside release mechanism. They fit. Check
Having trouble finding a cable ,so I went to look at the attachment on the trunk latch. I figured worst case I could have one fabricated.
PROBLEM!!!!
How do you remove the plastic piece on the edge of the trunk that covers the latch (and trunk carpet edge)?
There are several pop outs along the top edge of the plastic piece but there is a lot of resistance so I didn't force them too hard.
I know this is a silly question but I dont want to break anything I can avoid.
re: 93 del sol - trying to replace the trunk/gas release lever
Dude....I need pics to see what you are even talking about.
I'm sure the del sol never came with a trunk release and watching video's of people breaking into their own del sols made me realize why you want to do this.
re: 93 del sol - trying to replace the trunk/gas release lever
That plastic piece is riveted to the carpet, but it just pops right off the metal. Trim tools help, well worth 1.89 imho.

Later model Sols did have a trunk release, 1995+ . I read somewhere (forums?) that a later model release should pretty much bolt right into a 93.
With the cables being hard to find i would do some research and find the part# of a oem release. Get the specs on it, then get one fabricated. Or just order one from majestic.
re: 93 del sol - trying to replace the trunk/gas release lever
Just remove the clips along the top edge then undue the clips holding it to the sides of the trunk carpet. Hopefully you can see all the clip holes in the pictures. See how the plastic is part of the carpet.
Squeeze from the bottom and pry from the top indent if you have one, wrap your prying devices in electrical tape or a rag to keep from messing up the interior.
re: 93 del sol - trying to replace the trunk/gas release lever
Well you can't really tell where to squeeze from, you say squeeze from the bottom but the bottom of what clip? How do you even get to the bottom of the clip if its inside, behind the panel?
re: 93 del sol - trying to replace the trunk/gas release lever
Thanks! I got it. The explanation and pics really helped! Now got to figure out which of these five nuts need to come off to remove the license plate panel so i can get to the latch itself!
For now though....I'm off to dinner and the theater with my bride!
Yeah I was reading up on how some people were using the latches from other makes/models and modifying it to work. Pretty neat idea if you want to lock the latch.
Re: 93 del sol - trying to replace the trunk/gas release lever
So....Finally got the stupid latch off! Ended up having to drill the heads off the screws.....then could turn them out by hand once the latch was out! Aaaaargh!
Went to a local lawnmower repair shop and had a cable fabricated (for half the price of one from honda that MIGHT work. Have I mentioned that I am UNIMPRESSED with my local honda dealer?
