Default 00 Civic HX, 5-speed - D16y5 to D16y8 Transmission question

What's the difference between the y5 and y8 transmissions? My input shafts bearing is going out and I'm thinking about going with the y8, heard it has shorter gear... this true?

shorter gearing, different fd on the y8 transmission. all 92-00 civic manual d series transmissions will work. if you want to keep the fuel economy the hx was meant for, find another y5 transmission. y8 is considered a performance upgrade by most for non-ex civics.
