I'm picking up a 91 Hatch on monday. It's a 4spd. Can I swap in a 5spd from and D series?

I have to change the clutch so I figured why not since the tranny will be out anyways. why would I want to keep the 4 speed?

 

Yes, I hate the 4 speed transmission on long trips.

 

so is 91 the only year that had a cable 5spd?

 

Civic perhaps, CRX 88-91 had 5 speed available on all trim levels and it fits your car the same.
CRX HF 5 speed has very long gears I would not recommend ~2.5K RPM at 70 MPH
CRX DX 5 speed has good daily driven gears. 3K RPM at 70 MPH
CRX Si 5 speed more sporty feel 3.5K at 70MPH

hmmm. That's actually not that far from me. Maybe if I cant find a DX or SI one.

 

I've been looking everywhere looking for a cable trans. locally. The only thing I can find is a crx HF trans which I hear are not great because of the long gearing. Would that still be better than the 4 speed? Or would it be smarter to get a hydro trans and the conversion kit. I can get the kit for $75 and a hydro for $78
