its been a while since i have tackled a timing belt project. i'm having a hell of a time getting the belt on the car. i have the cam gears set and the crank set at the timing marks, i start at the crank with the belt, then go to the tensioner, then h20 pump, intake cam, and then when i get to the intake cam i cannot get the belt to go over the cam gear. its like its a hair too small. i tried pushing the tensioner as far as i can in my favor, but still no luck. any ideas?

have you tried sliding the belt over both cam gears evenly at the same time?
also i found that you can get a little more free movement in the belt if you've only got it partially pushed over each component, so start by trying to slide half the width of the belt onto the crank, then around the tensioner, then water pump, then both cam gears at the same time. once it can be pushed up onto the cam gears then you can slide it on little by little all the way round until it's all the way on

The factory service manual places the order of belt installation as follows:
1) Around crank gear
2) Over tensioner pulley - Leave bolt 1/2 turn loose from proper torque spec
3) Around water pump
4) Around Exhaust camshaft gear
5) Finally, around Intake camshaft gear.
It is not specified in the FSM, but the suggestion above about placing the belt halfway deep on the timing components has merit and may make the installation easier.
If this method doesn't work for you... and we are assuming that you do in fact have a 126 tooth timing belt, let us know here and I can offer a couple "tricks" to help if necessary.

You need a new timing belt. They are not all made equal. I bought a gates belt off amazon and couldnt get it to fit, then i went to oreillys and bought a new gates belt and it fit nicely.

i had about 30-45 minutes i could mess with this again last night. i double checked the part number to make sure it was correct, i counted the "teeth" on the belt and it is the correct number. i will have to try aligning everything with just the edge again. i got it close last night, but no cigar with the amount of time i had to mess with it. i should be able to dedicate at least 90 minutes to the car after work tonight and try to get this belt on

I usually have an open end wrench on the intake cam gear bolt to turn the cam 1/4 turn to the right as I slip the last part of the timing belt on. As the gear turns, it pulls the slack tight and gives the belt enough space to slip right on.

I think i finally got it! I will confirm tomorrow when i get the pulley on to rotate the crankshaft per the manual to make sure everything stays in time with each other.

This is how i do it sometimes when im having trouble, but my last timing belt went very smooth, i also used a cam lock.
