Just got a 88 crx 5mt with d15b2. It doesn't have any timing belt covers and i was wondering what the procedure would be to install the lower cover? Makes me uncomfortable having it open like that... the upper cover should be fine off but definitely a lower cover should be in place.

Also im trying to replace the starter and i saw two manufacturer numbers listed. How do i know which is correct?

 

For the lower cover. You will need to do several things.

1. Remove front bumper splash shield.
2. Remove all belts. (except for timing of course.)
3. Remove crank pulley. May need a puller, sometimes they come off easily without. Don't lose the key. I tape it to the pulley, then use a touch of silicone on pulley (NOT THE CRANK SHAFT!!!) to hold it in place while reassembling.)

At this point you can see if you can slide the bottom cover on without removing the top. You may be able to. If not you have to remove the valve cover and top cover.

Also you may have to remove the dipstick tube, but my memory is foggy.

 

As for your starter, I think the transmission case and flywheel should be the same. The different between years in the splines for the clutch.

 

Nw battery. But when i try to start it after sitting for a day the starter gets no action. Just dash lights. I roll start it, run it for about ten minutes or drive it around, and it will start full strength all day long, as long as i domt let it sit more than a few hours. When its in a no start condition, the headlights do NOT dim with key in START. The dash lights stay lit, and a very audible CLICK is heard. Just cleaned the valve cover and tranny grounds the other day and replaced the negative battery cable clamp. I dont know where the negative grounds to body since it has a battery relocation kit to trunk. What is it?

 

check main relay. if its not in the FAQ thread just search this forum lots of info.

 

Why would it be the main relay? The dash lights come on with KOEO and flick out when i put it in START. I will test my power at the starter. If i get no 12v to starter with key in START would that be the ignition switch?

 

After sitting all night the crx fired right up in 20 degree weather! What the hell... the ignition cylinder looks aftermarket. I dont have a honda key. My key looks like a front door key. So im assuming the tumbler was replaced in the past. How bad is it really to get to the main relay? Is it just a matter of removing a lot of parts?

Okay so it's 3 degrees outside. I went out to start the crx and the usual, key in start and just a click. Let go of key, warning lights are back on. I tried the key twice to no avail. Took a second, then turned the key, and voila, full power to the starter, and its now running. Is that a main relay issue? Does the main relay control the starter?? Or does that "click" I hear indicate the starter relay but the starter not responding, and therefore a starter problem?
