Holset HX35 for 350hp?
Hey guys
I've been offered a Holset HX35 turbo for a good price. Just wondering if it's gonna be any use on my forged B16a2 engine?
I'm aiming for 350-400hp. It's not going to be a street car.
Anyone got any experience with these?
Thanks

7 blade, or 8 blade? the 7 blade compressor wheel flows more than the 8 blade, but not by much. Regardless, both turbos could hit your goal pretty easily depending on the fuel. With 92 octane (what I have locally here) 350whp sounds right with 17-20 psi. With e85, e95, e100, or race fuel, whatever youre using, you could easily get into the 400s.
Thanks for the reply. It's a 7 blade compressor wheel.
We have 99 octane available at the pumps over here (although i think we may rate octane slightly differently)
Do you have much of an idea on spool time? It seems like it may have a bit of lag.

12cm2 turbine housing, you should see full boost around 5500-6000. Ive seen a hx40 hit full boost around 6500 on a b16. which has a larger wheel and turbine housing.

An HX35 is actually too large for your power goal. The 7 blade HX35 is rated for 60 lb/min so that's 540 - 600 whp depending on the setups efficiency and fuel used.
As said above it will hit your power goals pretty easily, but you will be giving up some spool in favour of its power capability.
Make sure you have no larger than the 12cm2 divided housing, you can even look at reworking a 0.63 Garrett T3 turbine housing to bring it in a little sooner. Manifold size and design is also crucial in making Holsets work and spool properly on performance gasoline applications.
One of my customers made 550whp on a stock head VW 2.0TFSI (GTI) engine with the 7-blade HX35 and some Mitsubishi's have made that and more - so the flow is there if your engine can use it.
