How much will this cost me? (GSR head)
So I was able to pick up a complete 96 GSR motor for super cheap. The block is in good condition but I'll be doing an OEM rebuild on it. My main question is the head. The previous owner F'd it up. Would this be able to be rebuilt? Or would it be cheaper to find a good used condition head?
Thanks for any input. :thumb:

Looks like the head needs a valve job, shouldn't be too bad. I hope you got it cheap. The last cheap one I picked up recently had a mint head but bad bottom end, but was complete with all sensors and such. Cost me $100
It's difficult to tell from the image, if the valve seat is wasted or not. It might just need a valve job....grind on the head. You'd have to rely on a good shop to tell you. I'd take out the valves and get a better look, or take it to a shop for disassembly and assessment.
I'd bet that piece of the valve really messed up the piston...cylinder.

It's not hard to disassemble these heads, reassembly is kinda tricky, but it can be left to a machine shop. There's instructions on valve stem seals for these heads on this cite that can be found easily through the search, and they're very straight forward. Step by step from tear down to rebuild. Even if you don't reassemble your self you can get a better look at the valves/valve seats. Then, if you don't want to reassemble for whatever reason you can take everything to the machine shop. I'd imagine that would include new valves based on the picture but it's hard to tell.
Cost is easily determined at a cite OEMacuraparts or something like that, google will know. You just gotta figure out what all you need, and what the machine shop is going to charge whatever it is you are asking of them.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll be taking some more pictures of the entire motor this weekend.
I planned on rebuilding it myself but Will get a quote from a machine shop. Might be easier to have it rebuilt elsewhere and I can swap it in.

Previous posters are right. Definitely a good valve job, make sure they check your exhaust guides. Since you've got more than one burnt valve it wouldn't surprise me if all the guides might need replaced. Head set $60, exhaust valves are 8-12 for stock replacements, guides $2-3 a piece, and make sure you get it surfaced. I've never had a Honda head cracked, but it wouldn't hurt to have it pressure tested. All together I'd say $350-450, but every shop varies as far as labor. I just finished my gsr head last week so it's still fresh.
