Default B16a2 transmission problem

I was pulling away from a stop sign and suddenly no power. Engine running fine. No action in any gear. When I let the clutch out slowly there's a grinding/rattling noise around the 1/2 way point. This happens in every gear including reverse and also in neutral. The speedo always moves as well - including neutral).

Clutch pedal and shifting fells like normal.

It happened close to home so was able to push it back. When first pushing it (engine off) there was a rattling noise but that went away fairly quickly.

I haven't been able to get it to a shop yet and am hoping it may possibly be something simple. Anyone have any ideas? If transmission needs to be replaced which others are compatible?

I've found lots of good info on these forums in the past but this time I've been unable to find another post that fits.

2000 civic sir (Canada), si in USA.
310,000 km/190,000 miles
Original clutch/trans
Never any indication of anything wrong with transmission in past.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The clutch is likely broken is some way. If you can get it into gear while the car is off, but not while its on thats usually a clear indication towards clutch

Yes.

Either one of the two axles popped out of the differential (you'll see one side will be out 1/4" or so or an axle broke (usually the outer joint)

If an axle popped out or broke how does the speedo still move while in neutral? This is the part I can't make sense of.

I tried it again today while moving the steering wheel around and the symptoms were the same in any position.

Hoping to get it to a mechanic tomorrow to have it opened up. I'd love to do it myself but don't have the space or specialty tools.

The speedometer gear gets its measurment from the differential. If you popped out an axle from the transmission, the diff will still spin, but the axles won't, so you still get a speedo reading.

If the axle popped out of the transmission the fix is easy. I use a piece of wood with a rag on the end, and a big hammer and just pop it back in (rag and wood so i don't mess up the boot)

So it turned out to be the axle after all. But not popped out - it broke. The damper had come loose which had wore away at the shaft until it wore too thin and eventually broke.

Thanks for the suggestions.
