Default Grinding noise during start up and looking for flywheel OEM replacement part.

Hi,

I own a Civic 1.6iVT (EE9) and i´m having an issue when starting the car.

For some time, the engine started fine but some times it did an grinding noise for an half an second.

The mechanic told me it should be the starter bendix/solenoid and installed a new one. However the part he installed wasn´t the correct one so he had to machining it. I don´t know if that´s the reason or not but the problem remains. Exactly the same symptom and the same noise.

He will take a new look at it but unfortunately i start to suspect the problem can be the flywheel.

In advance i was trying to look for some OEM replacement flywheel, only to have an idea of the prices but surprisingly i can´t find a single one. I can find for other Honda engines, but not for B16. Only lightweight flywheels which costs a lot more the ones i was looking for other engines. I found Flywheels from $50 ou $60 from Sachs for example, when a lightweight flywheel costs almost $300.

Does anyone knows any company that produces OEM replacement flywheels for this engine?

Beware of the exedy flywheel, I bought one and it grinded. They didn't warranty it either.

Not yet, i will as soon as i identify the real problem and if it´s the flywheel... The car is already in the mechanic. But i think it will be really expensive. I saw an Honda online catalogue where it costs more than $600!

Thanks for the advice. I think i´ll avoid that.

In the last resource, i found an ACT Streetlite for about $300. But it´s a lot more than i want to spend and i would prefer a stock one with the same weight... The car is almost stock.

Meanwhile i found this one:

FX Racing OE Spec Flywheel Crv B20 Integra B17 B18 Civic Si Delsol B16 DOHC VTEC

However i don´t know it´s quality... and when i tried to simulate the shipping costs it resulted in more than $300! I live in Europe. I send them an e-mail asking for a quote but i´m still waiting.

I would advise one of the ebay sellers who carry fidanza.

Lots of good reviews

Also: There is a plate than can be removed to visually inspect the flywheel.
Maybe the ringtooth broke.

Well, i have some news. Unfortunately bad ones.

It´s seems it´s the Flywheel indeed. Some teeths are chipped.

They told me a genuine Honda flywheel costs a little more than $500 (and they didn´t know if it´s in stock). I will not give that money for it. Besides that, i´ll have to pay for the job done.

So, i´m looking again for a OEM Replacement Flywheel but i still can´t find a single one. It´s impressive. I can find for other cars, even some other Hondas, but not for the B16, one of the most popular Honda engines.

So, i´ll leave the question one more time.

Does anyone knows any good brand (i don´t want chinese stuff), that sells OEM Replacement Flywheels for B16? I want one with the same specs the original one. Even the same weight.

If i´m not able to find one, i´m thinking about the ATC Streetlite, but i really prefer a stock weight one. It´s a daily drive car. I´m not racing with it and it´s almost stock. Only the catalytic is off and it has a Supersprint muffler.

Edit:

Wow, finally i think i found some compatible flywheels... including from Luk and Sachs.

I´m looking at the LuK LFW225.

Can anyone please confirm if it´s compatible with B16?

It talks about CR-V 2.0 and some Integras too, but not the Type-R. But i guess as long as they fit in a B series it doesn´t matter if it´s a VTEC version or not, i´m i right?

exedy/daikin is OE.

sorry to hear you messed up your installation. im really not surprised. doesnt change the facts.

I had an ACT clutch. one of my worst upgrades, pointless for a stock engine.

No, i don´t think so... At least i never heard that name...

Meanwhile, the mechanic told me he was trying and trying to adjust the starter and even doing some fine adjustments in the bendix but no results at all. The symptoms still there. He says it´s the flywheel, no doubts.

However, theres something strange.

He gave me the old bendix and i´m looking at it and i don´t notice any teeth damage. Shouldn´t the bendix teeth damage before the flywheel teeth? Or the damage is something that sometimes can´t be checked at naked eye?

Here some pics of the old bendix. I can take some other photos and i´ll do a movie with the sound the car makes.

There won't be any damage, it's just the teeth not engaging correctly.
So it's like a rub.
They are really strong, because obviously if they broke easily. You'd hsave no starter

I had an xxedy flywheel put in and the teeth were not machined correctly so it would rub.

The exedy on the left and the bisimoto on the right

You see the exedy has a small ridge left in the deepest part of each groove. That's where it was rubbing, this maybe could have been solved by grinding the teeth of the starter down a bit, or spacing it higher.

The Bisimoto is 9 lbs and so I just used that one.

Here´s a small video of the noise.

Sometimes it does an even worse sound.
