Default Paint flakes under valve cover

Hey guys, I recently purchased a b16a longblock. And well, I was kinda skeptical on buying it because there was a good amount of paint flakes inside the head, all the way down to the top of the valves. It was a steal so I bought it anyways So am I being ocd or will the filter just pick it up, and then just change the oil right after startup then good?

Your filter will get what goes back down to the pan. But then there is all of the chips in the center trough that the lobes might pick up and slap into the rocker arms. Or splash into crevices.

And what about when the filter becomes full and the bypass valve opens up, letting those chips fly through your oil orifices in the rocker arms, crank journals etc etc.

The other question is, did the previous owner already run it with all those chips?

This sounds like a horrible situation in my opinion.

I'd sure as hell hope not. PO said he was stripping down the valve cover, and some of this must be true because there's paint drip all over the damn long block.

Okay how about if I take to a machine shop and have them used compressed air?

I can take a pic if it would help. There's not like a bunch of flakes but enough to get me scared.

So how about 3 immediate oil and filter changes and you don't think I'll be good?

I feel so stupid for buying this now.

HELP!

This is what I'd likely do.

Pull the pan and the head. If nothing is in the pan, then I'd feel confident on the bottom end and the head I would have jet washed or even pressure spray myself.

Then you are only out a head gasket.

I'm also assuming you have at least a small air compressor to dry out everything in the head so you can oil it back down.

Great idea. No I do not own any air tools. I only have my garage, I'll just send the head out.

Everything I do is with hand tools. My tiny air compressor is for interior detailing, pumping up tires and blowing out oil passages etc. It can run a nail gun but is crap for air tools like impact guns etc. But hey for 60 bucks, it works for what I use it for (leak down test anyone?).

Building a motor with only hand tools? Check my build thread. Only hand tools, in an apartment bedroom. No excuses.
