whats going on guys, new to the forums. I've tried looking for a thread with this issue but no luck, if you happen to know the link to it id really appreciate if you could directed me to it.
Heres my issue, i bought a 91 std hatch with a d15b2 in it, ran but smoked like crazy. so bought another motor (d16a6) and used the dual point mani since i didn't have the stuff to convert it to multi point. Threw it in the car and it ended up having bad rings as well, it would run but if i had all vacuum lines connected and the map sensor hooked up it would start and surge and then wouldn't let me drive at all it would just blog and die instantly (with no engine light either). anyways didn't think much of it at the time so pulled the motor out rebuilt it and reinstalled it and no more smoke, but still having this issue with the car. if i pull the vacuum hose off the map sensor the car would start up run really rough for like 5-10 seconds then the check engine light would come on and it would kind of clear up. and would be drive able but hesitate until bout 2500 rpm then would kinda clear up (check engine light is for code 5) i tried multiple map sensors, check the hoses and for vacuum leaks and no luck.
So at this point i started thinking maybe i had the timing off. i had seen a post about even though its a si motor since the shells a std model your suppose to use the marks that go even with the head on the cam gear. but i set it up to the 7 o'clock mark. i know the timing set correctly to the 7' o'clock timing I've checked multiple times. so i loosened up the dizzy bolt and moved it toward the firewall as far as it could go (i believe that advancing the timing but not exactly sure) also i don't have access to a timing light at the time but wanted to see if this would make difference. so before i started it i hooked the vacuum line back up to the map sensor and then started it up, started up fine no surging and i took off driving and it ran better (from it not wanting to drive at all with the vacuum line hooked up) but not great, so i went down the road to test drive it and after about 2-3 miles it started bogging and not wanting to drive so i pulled off to the side of the road and it died. so i opened up the hook and pulled the vacuum line off the map sensor and it started up and i had to wait the few seconds for the check engine light to come on for i could take off again, it was hesitating less since i advanced the timing. so I'm thinking something in the dizzy might be heating up and causeing it to not want to drive after a few miles. because at first start in the morning it runs way better before the 2-3 miles. also I'm thinking my timing may be off maybe it need to be at the marks with the head since i had to move my dizzy all the way toward the fire wall to make it run a bit better. I'm like 80% sure this might be a dizzy issue but i don't want to spend $200+ and it end up not being the issue. anyone every had this problem?? any input would be great
Yeah I know how to set the timing, I set it when I rebuilt the motor two weeks ago but saw that there was two ways to set it, the d16a6 came out of a si crx but I threw it in a std model so I'm not sure which timing I'm suppose to use, I set it to the si timing (7 o'clock position)
I would think that using the 7 o'clock position is correct since mechanical timing is camshaft to crankshaft with respect to TDC. What I would check is to see what the ignition timing is for a STD model. You're still using the STD ECU right? And did you use the crank pulley that came with the Si engine or did you reuse your old one?
Yea I'm still using the ecu that was in the car when it had the d15b2 in it and I used the crank pulley that came with the si motor. I know that code 5 is for ignition timing or cam timing as well.
