Default Strange knock

hello all I have a 93 delsol si with a d16z6.
Well just a couple days ago I noticed a slight knocking noise Its kind of hard to describe.

The problem is the only time I hear it is when i'm in the car. It gets louder if you get closer to the clutch brake and gas pedals. I think it is rpm dependent so it changes with my revs.

I have money to rebuild my motor if that's the problem. Its getting cold and don't want to be stuck without a car in the middle of winter.

Also I checked for exhaust leaks and didn't find any. Someone I know suggested the water pump or oil pump and timing belt tensioner could make a knocking noise. I'm not sure if that's true.

But anyone have any thought or ideas of what it could be or how to check?

Get a piece of garden hose about 3 feet long, and use it like a stethoscope held up to one ear and move it around the running engine to try to isolate where the noise is coming from. Just don't get it caught in the belts or fan. This is old school mechanics. Knocks are not good, could be a rod bearing. Could add some oil additive super lube and if the noise goes away it's a sign of a bad bearing somewhere. Not good news but at least you will know.

Thanks that's a good idea to use a hose and I definitely will try it later today. Any reason I can only hear it from inside my car?

If it is bearings do you normally need to replace anything else or just bearings.

Main bearings or rod bearings, once you open up an engine to do either you may as well replace a lot of things. If your engine is high mileage you may as well find a low mileage D16Z6 from a automatic (low revved) car. The noise may be travelling thru the firewall where the pedals come thru the floor. Low end engine knock is usually serious.

You can also use a long screwdriver to your ear as a stethoscope as well, where the knocking is coming from will come through. As said, be careful of moving engine parts.

On different cars, different things can cause knocks that sometimes sound like it is something else, I won't talk about my other one as it is not a Honda but the right thing to do is figure the source of the noise.. I hope it is something minor. Congrats on having a D16Z6, that's a great engine.

Could also be a alternator bearing, A/C compressor bearing, power steering pump bearing, cracked fan belt, water pump bearing, timing belt tensioner pulley, anything that rotates.

On my other car, a loose flexplate sounds exactly like rod knock.

Well got home today and looked under my car and found coolant leaking from the lower timing belt cover. So I'm pretty sure my water pump is toast.

I read online that there is a weep hole or something that drains when it's going bad so I'm hoping that it's leaking and the source of my knocking.

Also I tried listening around and using hoses and extensions to pinpoint the noise my cars to damn loud to hear anything. Haha

Water pump, that's good, one of the cheaper options. Do your timing belt while you are right there.

Most places sell the whole kit so I'm definitely going to do my timing belt while I'm at it. Well I guess after my part gets here I'll install it and see if the knock went away and post my results.

Any of you think an ebay kit is a good or bad idea?
Thanks for all the help so far.

I'd go Amazon but that's just me.. Amazon is kind of suspect on car parts, sometimes.

What brand is the kit? Might not matter where you get it from.

OEM only, meaning from Honda. If you're gonna order online than you might as well order the parts from a Honda online parts store. Get cam and crank seals too.

The rear main seal? He isnt losing oil, and i disagree on cam seal. If it aint broke, dont fix it.
