You want the pointer at the red mark so im not sure why he failed you.

You have the blue service connector jumped with a paperclip, right ?

To holmesnmanny

Yes, that's correct, i jumped the blue service connector when i set the ignition timing. The car has new spark plugs, spark plug wires, and distributor cap and rotor.

My HC barely passed 36/36. Could this mean the timing is probably on the advance side? then that means the red marking is not the 15 BTDC. Maybe it's one tick mark above the red marking? I'm confuse. Many thanks!

Looking at the pic again you want the middle of the pointer to be at the red line and yours appears to be slightly off so the left picture is the correct procedure.

sorry for not explaining what i was posting. i posted that image for illustrating multiple marking. so we could have a better understanding what i was talking about. i had to turn the crank pulley manually so i could take a photo of the marking.

For some reason, on my 1993 accord, it has 5 tick marking. 2 tick marking on both side of Red mark. i noticed on others flywheel, they had only 3 marking. one marking on both side of Red mark.

I did set the timing to the red marking, and that failed the ignition timing test at smog station.

Many thanks.

You need to go back to that tech and ask him to let you see him test the timing because you know its spot on.

Pull out your timing gun and show him.

Many thanks for you help.

I went out and bought an adjustable timing light. and this solved all the confusion. point the timing light at the White mark, found the 15 BTDC.

Therefore, it turns out that the 2nd tick mark above the red marking is the 15 BTDC ignition timing.

Found this article online,

""The proper timing should be at the 2nd tick mark ABOVE the Red Timing Mark on the Inspection Plate of the Flexplate/Flywheel. ""

What is the timing aliment on a 90 Honda Accord LX

If you have a f22a6,a4,a1 engine there will be a white mark which is tdc and there will be 3 marks for bdtc. The one in the middle is what you want to set it at which is -15 btdc. The other two on opposite sides of that mark are -13 btdc and -17 btdc.

I suppose if you have a different engine than those then the marks could be different but it's normally the same way for most engines.
