Default radio have to work to install AUX in adapter?

i got a 2003 accord coupe LX which i've had only a few weeks, and now i know most of them have problems with the stereos,

the cd player did'nt work and would'nt eject the cd, but the radios been working with no problems, until the other night, it would shut off at random times, which was really annoying, and would say ERROR on the display, and if i turned it off and back on while pressing 1 & 6 buttons it started working again ?

so i'm trying to figure out the best solution to be able to listen to music, and i have read about people installing AUX-IN Adapters to their stock radio, so you can plug in an mp3 player to it, my question is : does my stock radio and CD/AUX button need to work? in order to be able to install and use an AUX-IN Adapter ? cause currently if i press the CD/AUX button, it does'nt change or do anything on the display?, would that need to work in order to make use of an AUX adapter ?

thanks for any help
