I've been working on my civic for two years and it is running and what not. It will start and idle fine, I can give it gas in park and neutral all I want just fine. When I put it in gear it'll do what it should and start moving forward but if I give it gas it will die on me! I don't think it's a fuel problem because I can rev the crap out of it in park. Could it be a part of the ignition? Any sensors? Anything! Please help! Thank you
<p>Is the CEL on? Does it work? What ECU are you using? What transmission are you using? Check your mechanical and ignition timing.</p>
CEL is on but I can't take it anywhere to scan it. Does what work? The stock automatic transmission for the D16Y7 and the stock ECU for it, not sure what they are. But I know mechanical timing is set right and timing belt is good. Can I set the ignition timing myself without the timing light tool?
Your ignition timing is usually controlled by the ECU. But if you feel your "starting point" is off, you can simply adjust it by breaking loose the three bolts that hold the distributor to the head and turning CW or CCW. Advance, retard. I would start with pulling that CEL code.

Reason: Needed to add more.
How long ago? Why were the wires not replaced? When was the last time you tested the igniter and coil?
Everything was about a year ago but it's been sitting in the garage for two years. Me and my dad got it as a project car. I will get wires, ignition coil, etc.. when I get paid. But all four wires are working so ignition is good right? Except for ignition timing maybe?
<p>If you're going to ignore the questions posed to you, what makes you think we can help you? We aren't psychics. If you don't do the tests we ask you to do, we can't help you.</p>
CEL light on, provided the link on how to pull CEL codes via service connector and blink codes, yet still no knowledge of what CEL code is stored/active.
I suspect the CEL code will likely provide a pretty solid insight before parts get trashed by random testing.

I didn't test the wires today, that was a few months ago. sorry I didn't get to messing with the car today. I will get the CEL code tomorrow sometime and let you guys know. I was at work until 11:30 tonight, sorry
I reset the ecu and drove it down the street, it died a few times but no engine codes were thrown. Could it be carbon buildup in the manifold/throttle body? or could it simply be that the fuel tank is really low?

Also plan on buying all the tune up parts when I get paid. What's everyone's opinion on seafoam? I did it on my Acura along with a tune up and it runs a ton better now, it had a really bad carbon problem. Also going to go to my grandpa's house to grab and ignition timing light when I get the chance and make sure ignition timing is good
OP, you stated previously that you and your father got this as a project car. What parts have you guys replaced, cleaned, tore apart, etc. Also, what condition was the car when you two got it? Was it running?

The car wouldn't start when we got it, when it would it wouldn't stay idling. We are using a block with lower miles and the same head and intake. Really the only things that are new are spark plugs, fuel pump, radiator, radiator hoses, intake manifold gasket, head gasket is new. I will be putting gas in it, getting new distributor cap and rotor, and wires when I get paid. Anything else I should get? There might be a couple new things that I can't remember at the moment.
