Trying to get in the "Honda Game" lol
I've owned Hondas and done work on them but never as a project or anything. How should I go about learning? I've never swapped a motor or transmission but I could with the right knowledge. I'm not rich or anything. How much should I spend? I'd prefer an EG coupe or Hatch. Possibly an EK. What's a good motor to start on?
Do you already have a daily driver and you're just looking for a project car, or do you need the car to be your daily as well? you can easily find an EG rolling shell or an unrunning EG for $500-$1000 on craigslist. You can also check Facebook and see if theres some kind of Honda group page for your area, those usually have great deals. I saw someone post an EK shell on Facebook yesterday for $175.
As far as swaps go, they're really not too difficult. I'd just have a look around online and see what swaps other people have done. Look at the hp numbers people are getting and try to figure out the plusses and minuses of each swap. It's gonna take some time and research, but you'll be glad you did it.
The popular swaps for the EG are the B series, K series and H series swaps. J series swaps also have quite a bit of support now, but they're more difficult and seem to be a lot less common. There is also some support for the F series swap using a conversion plate to bolt it up to a K series transmission. B series swaps are probably the easiest and most common because there were versions of the EG that came with B engines in them stock so they're almost a plug and play swap. H series swaps are also fairly easy if you go with a H2B kit that uses a B series transmission bolted up with a conversion plate. I have no experience with K swaps, but they also seem fairly easy now with all the support they've got. The downside to a K swap though is the higher price tag because it's a newer engine.
Really it's just going to take some research on your part to figure out exactly what you want. I was new to the Honda game only a year ago, and I researched for almost a year before that before I figured out what engine I wanted to swap. I eventually decided on an H23 Vtec H2B swap in my EG and I love it. Next I'd like to do a J swap. Or if some support pops up for the K23 swap then I'd love to do one of those, but right now support is non existent so it would be a completely custom job.

I haven't taken it to the track yet, but the guy I bought the engine from said he did low 13's when it was in his EG. It's pretty quick. The torque is real nice. Mines not quite a stock engine though. I've got an AEM V2 cold air, cams, DC headers, 2.5 exhaust and a nice tune on a p28 ecu.
If you're not rich and love EXTRA-spirited driving, its always easier to replace a B series swap (usually 800-1200$ for the motor on craigslist/jdm kingz) than to replace a blown K series (motor costs upwards of 2500). I am a fan of the K series, but they do like to blow so keep that in mind lol. If you look on craigslist, you can find already swapped DOHC Vtec eg's and ek's from people that are looking for cash NOW and are willing to let go of their years hardwork and money for a pretty low price, that's the best way to get started in my opinion.
