Default Overheat problem on EJ1 b16a1

So I have this EJ1 with a b16a1 engine swapped car. It over heats to about ¾ on the temperature gauge and it only happens when I'm driving on street roads or off highway roads but goes normal when I drive at high speeds. And also the thermostat has been changed and in the coolant reservoir is over the max line and the rad is about ¾ full. When the car is on the returning hose that connects to the rad doesn't have any coolant flowing just feels air and very little coolant flowing thru. And the coolant in the reservoir is a but murky and has a familiar smell. I want to know if its the water pump or thermostat or other part before I start taking them off and find out its neither.

Possibly the water pump has failed, clogged hose somewhere, and bad thermostat. Yes you can still get a bad thermostat.
