Icon2 OBD1 B-series ECU used on OBD1 D-series motor?

Hi all, been doing a lot of research on a learning project I am getting started on.

I'm take an OBD1 D-series SOHC motor and bringing the RPM up significantly. I've read higher RPM the Distributor "CKP" sensor is fairly inaccurate and timing based off of it can be problematic at best.

I'm looking to do this project as cheap as possible being it's my first round and if I blow the motor up, I'm not out a serious chunk of change.

I am wanting to change to a true CKP sensor down on the oil pump like what Honda did with OBD2 D series motors but I wish to stay OBD1.

I was thinking if I get an OBD1 B series ECU like the P72, chip it, whatever sensors I don't have/need (i.e. knock sensor, EGR valve etc) can be disabled, then maps and vtec can be set for the motor and the ECU will naturally accept the crank position sensor on the oil pump?

Is this a horrible idea, or is there a better way to get the functionality without having to pay for Hondata S300.

I was looking to chip and tune via Chrome as I found a reliable chrome tuner in my area and it's the most cost effective method for a one off deal.

Please advise me if I've lost my marbles or if I may be onto a possible solution to the flaky dizzy sensor issue.

I've learned I erred on thinking the P72 OBD1 Integra ECU utilized a CFK sensor found on the cranks of OBD2 Honda engines.

So I guess the question(s) to the experienced Chrome tuners is(are)....

Can OBD1 chipped ECU's be programmed to utilize a CFK sensor?

If yes, would this be in addition to the CKP sensor in the dizzy or in replacement of the CKP?

The crankshaft fluctuation sensor was used primarily for misfire detection and are not used for timing purposes, the exception being OBD2 H22 engines sold in US which do not have a ckp sensor in the distributor and do use a crankshaft position sensor mounted near the crank gear. Having tuned H22 engines w/both arrangements I can see no reason to use the OBD2 arrangement. Have turned in excess 9600RPM w/ckp in distributor.

I read through this thread a few years back. He mentioned removing a tooth or something from the reluctor ring for crank sensing. Most of his build thread is basically a copy and paste from ENDYN, so not really to be taken as original.

Not gonna happen on a factory ecu. the CKF is a Hall effect sensor, the ecu is looking for a variable reluctor.

Edit: scratch that. Some are, some aren't. Is the one you're looking at a three wire or a two wire plug?

I was more just looking for information beyond what was posted in that D15B2 build thread on onecamonly.

It gave the impression that tuning wouldn't be as precise in the higher rpm ranges with just the CKP sensor in the Dizzy.

But by the looks of the replies, it should be just fine.

I've heard others say just how problematic the Honda Dizzy is so thought there was relevance to the build information of the onecamonly.

In the end, realized if one wants to get deeper into something of the like, then a full stand alone EMS is required like AEM or such.

For my purposes this time around, I'm not looking to shell out that kind of cash as my situation is a frugal build for the learning experience.

Thanks for all the replies, definitely helpful.
