Default D15B7 Crank Gear Timing mark issues

So I was doing my timing, did a good amount of research online, and found something conflicting. According to forums, if the key hole is at 12 o clock, the notch on the gear should be roughly 1 o clock. I am going to include a picture I got online. My concern is that if I have the notch on the gear at 12 o clock, the key hole is around 3 o clock. It is a 1995 honda Civic - not original engine. What lead me to re-do the timing; I was driving and my crankshaft bolt broke and lost my harmonic balancer. Parked it ASAP. This is my first time doing timing. I appreciate any information.

Thanks, Quintin

This is a picture I got online that shows the notch and the key.

Forget the "o'clock" stuff, there should be a pointer on the oil pump that the notch aligns to. That is where you set it at for TDC for the crankshaft. If all else fails, take the spark plug out of #1 and stick the dip stick in the hole. Watch as it travels and you can determine visually where TDC is based on that.

EDIT: Keep in mind that the crank will pass TDC twice per one revolution of the camshaft. If you are trying to find TDC of the engine itself, both camshaft and crankshaft alignment should be taken into consideration simultaneously.

I don't even see the timing mark on the crank shaft gear in that picture. There should be a raised line on the gear that aligns to the arrow on the oil pump.

I'm assuming you found it based off your reply to 24TEN.

Then again you did say it's not the original engine....

I got it all together - timing cover back on, and then did some research because it didn't seem right and I don't want to ruin my engine

TomCat39-It's in the picture, it's a groove/notch not a raised line

My D15B7 looked like this (minus the broken bolt):

Name: 007-2.jpg
Views: 6226
Size: 89.2 KB

And is why I was looking at the picture confusedly.

With that notch/groove though, if I have my key at 12 o clock, the notch is around 3 o clock. Is that right? Or should I still set the notch to the pointer, or should i put the key straight up? I will attempt the dipstick in cylinder 1 when I get home

Did you notice the page from the service manual doesn't even say anything about position regarding "o'clock" stuff? Again, if you are truly worried do the dipstick trick. As you rotate watch it as it moves up and down. At it's peak the notch should also align to the pointer.

I'm interested in seeing it at 3 o'clock though. Take a picture of it.

TomCat39-Sweet you have both! LOL

When I get home I will take a picture. I wish I would have yesterday. Just at work now - my time for research lol. Amazon - Where you can come in completely covered in oil.

You know what? I was completely mistaken. It was just how it was shown. I have my timing set now. Woot! Thanks everyone for your input.
