1996 accord misfiring 1500-3000 rpm
My 96 accord f22 is misfiring but only 1500-3000 rpm. It's a 5 speed. New plugs, wires, distributer cap and rotor. Also new fuel pump. And the only time it misses is when I'm just cruising maintaining a constant speed. If I accelerate it doesn't do it. I'm stumped as to what is causing this
Most likely lean misfire due to clogged EGR ports.
Remove the fuel rail/injectors.
Underneath you will see a plate with five bolts.
This plate and its cover is the EGR manifold.
Remove this manifold from the intake and clean the main EGR port and the four ports in the intake runners. They are stepped. A #1 and #2 round shaft flat head screw driver are perfect for cleaning out these ports. Use the #2 and screw it into the carbon deposits while vacuuming out the carbon. You will hit a ledge as the ports are stepped. Do not force the screw driver. Use the #1 screwdriver to clear out the rest of the port, gently 'drilling' into the carbon while sucking out the bits with the vacuum. Runner #4 has the smallest port, while #1 will have the largest, do not worry that the ports are not all equal in size, this is due to the distance #1 cylinder is from the EGR valve.
With the ports done, separate the EGR manifold and clean out the runners and ports inside, as well as the ports on the manifold plate.
Whatever you do, do NOT use sillicone based cleaners or greases. These will contaminate and coat the O2S and catalyst rendering them ineffective. Use a bit of wheel bearing grease to lube injector O-rings when reinserting into manifold.
I do not use carb/TB cleaner as it just makes a mess. Gently scrape the carbon deposits off the manifold until all the ports are clear of obstruction.
Tighten the 5 EGR manifold bolts hand tight ~8-10 ftlbs. FSM states 17 but this is incorrect and will cause you to break the bolts. Start each bolt and evenly tighten them all down. Do no tighten one and leave the others loose as this may cause the bolt to break.
