97 Civic cx - getting very frustrated with misfires
Sry to start another thread. Long story short I have a miss I cannot find. I've done a complete tuneup reset the cel and it comes back. Was getting a code for #4 cylinder miss. Swaped 4 and 3 injectors reset cel and the cel came back on but moved to #3. So I replaced all the injectors since the originals all looked tterrible. Reset the cel car drove fine for a day then I started getting a miss again. Not so much at idle but trying to go a constant speed. The car Will cut out. I either have to give it more gas or wait for the motor to catch up with itself. Mpg is in the ******* as well. Today the cel popped on now it's a misfire in #2. I reset the code and rechecked the spark plug wire and injector connections but they all seemed fine. I'm stumped, frustrated frustrated, and about broke. I have not checked the coil out and it does not appear that the car has had much routine maintenance done to it in the past. I just need help fixing this thing. Cars a 97 cx btw.
Check out Ron's page for spark testing: https://honda-tech.com/honda-civic-d...blems-2919450/
Also, do a compression check for each cylinder:

I will check out the coil. Why would the miss keep changing cylinders though? Especially after it followed the injector be I replaced them all?
Good question. Maybe your ECU is the issue but, that's just a WAG. Maybe some of the real brains on HT will chime in for answers.

I will try and get to the grounds this week if I have time after work. I'm still undecided if its a spark or fuel issue. Anyway its possibly either the coil or Icm Both have 160k on them so they are due for replacement. I can order these parts for 35ea. or I found a reman . Complete oem dizzy with a 1 yr warranted for 67. I'll probably just buy the dizzy and eliminate both issues at once. Fuel filter is original also.
I just went out and pulled #2 plug. It's grey so it's lean. Before I buy the dist. I need to rule out fuel issues I think. When I changed the injectors there was fuel in the rail. Idk how much fuel should be in there. I'm thinking maybe I should do the fuel filter first. Any ideas on possible causes? I guess it's possible the remfg. Injector isn't good either. I haven't thrown a code since it was reset Saturday, but it's running like **** and it's just a matter of time.
Well I replaced the fuel filter, but no change. I checked the timing and it's also ok. I think you guys are getting sick of me nobody has chimed in lately.
Next thing would be to replace the ignition coil if you know the cap and rotor are good and the spark plug wires are plugged in correctly to the distributor
well car was running a LITTLE beter this morning. it a was actually possible for to run a constant speed without to much issue. About 1/2 way to work the cel comes on again. I checked the code at work and this time I believe it was p0133. Not positive on the number but the description was upstream 02 sensor slow to respond. Both 02 sensors are new and ive never had this code before. The only other thing I did last night was pull the vacuum line from fpr to seel what happened. It was idling rough at that time and when i pulled the vacuum line there was strong vacuum at the line and the idle smoothed out but raised. There was no fuel in the vacuum line either. I drove it about 1/2 mile with no vacuum line hooked up but it stumbled so i brought it home and plugged it back in. IDK if this could have caused it but last night it threw no cel. I was only after 15 min. of driving today with the motor fully warmed up.
I am surprised nobody has suggested doing the Fuel Pressure tests following the FSM (Helm's Manual).
I would have also suggested doing a NOID test on the injectors to be certain they are receiving consistent signal.
I second going over all the grounds of the car, especially the one on the thermostat.
I would also be looking at continuity tests of the wiring harness between the ECU to the injectors and also the distributor and all the connectors in between.
I would have already swapped the fuel pressure regulator too since you've already been throwing crap loads of parts at it for a diagnostic instead of the diagnostic testing itself.
After I ruled out that all the parts are good and all the wiring is good, that pretty much leaves an ECU that is dying out slowly.

I am beyond terrible with doing electronic diagnosis. So that's a huge wall to get over.
The seller is sending me a new injector to try in #2 tho.
I haven't thrown a cel since I cleared the ones I have. Its still missing though. All injector plugs and wires look good as far as I've been able t. See.

Well I'm back from the asswhooping I got for the hood release pull I made. Basically wanted to update this thread as I finally tracked down the cause. After throwing buckets of $$ and banging my head against a wall, something dawned on me. Bear in mind the car had been to 2 shops one replaced parts I already replaced and the other could find nothing wrong, but verified the car was running like ****. I thought back to when the problem started and it was about the same time I put on the header. The cat is gone now so I was leaning to that being the cause. Just for ***** and giggles I switched the 02 sensor connectors around. I never labeled them when I took them off and I did have to stop working on the car for a few hours at that point. What do you know. It stumbled for 30 seconds the idle smoothed out and now 50 miles later it hasn't missed once. So I guess Im my own biggest enemy on this one.
I'm glad you posted the fix for the forum. Too often threads linger after the fix has occurred without any resolution posted for others to learn from.
i'm so pissed at myself for making this stupid *** mistake. I know better. This is type os dumb **** that happens when you rush things. I was trying to do the header and mow the grass while my wife was gone so she wouldn't freak out on me.
I spent most of my money I had to spend on other thing for the car replacing **** I didn't need to. Lesson learned. I did have enough to buy a set of wheels for it though. Not sure how Im gonna sneak these passed the wife yet.
