Default 97 civic ex 5 speed - loud knocking sound

Ok I'll try not to make this too long but it all started last night on my way home from work. It started make this loud knocking sound and it only got louder as I accelerated no matter what gear I was in. I stopped to check the oil and it was pretty low which is weird since I got an oil change a month and a half ago and topped it off with two quarts about two weeks ago. I'm not leaking oil I check under my car all the time. I replaced the valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, distributor o ring, and inner seal. Anyways I top off the oil and I start driving on the highway. Its knocking and spuddering louder and now I have my foot to the floor and Im only able to go about 40 mph. I down shift and I still can only go so fast. All of a sudden the car dies all the electrical still works and its just a oil light and a battery light. I crank the car and its very slow and hesitant to turn on. I get it to go another 200 feet this time max speed is slower then the last and it dies I do this one more time go some more and it dies and then I couldnt get it to start at all. Had it towed to my house he was able to drop it off in my driveway but I had to figure out how to get it back some more. It cranked on super loud knocking still and I was able to reverse it back and it died.

I was reading about knocking rods before this whole highway thing happend and I dont know what it might be. Engine? Transmission (I doubt it though). Is my engine done?

Sounds like you've got some pretty severe engine damage, probably due to oil starvation.
Knock sounds like bottom end. I'm thinking your engine is finished.
Maybe someone else will chime in with their opinion as well.

Yea that's toast. Something is shot in your bottom end, probably loosing compression too. Idk if you even want to explore but start tearing into it. Check plugs for burnt oil, check oil level, compression test if you want but yea you gotsta problem.

Thanks guys. I wish it was better news about the engine or atleast not as bad. What do you guys think a fair price is to swap in another used d16y8 at a shop? I called a few places waiting to hear back. But I dont want to just on the first one and get screwed over price wise.

Was your car running okay before you did the oil service? These engines don't really nurn that much oil, so for you to have to top off the engine with two quarts, less than a month after the oil change, is kind of weird.

Do a quick compression check or if you want, run the engine at idle and disconnect the plugs one at a time, that should give you an idea of which cylinder has the problem.

Are you getting the engine through them and also having them install it or are you scouting out your own and having them install? Check local listings for D series prices, I know I can find some decently used ones around me for 500-800. Better sources would be able to tell you a fair price. Just wait, perhaps you'll get a bite here.

Now that I think about it. It had some very mild knocking at certain RPMs cant remember where I want to say around 3500 or 4000 maybe then it would go away but it wouldnt do that all the time. Then last night it went from very faint sometimes to loud knocking constantly.

The shops are calling around for them. They are going to give me a price on used and reman. engines. Will shops do the swap if you bring your own engine in? I know alot of places around here wont do stuff if you bring your own parts but I'm not sure about engines. im assuming around 500-800 hopefully after looking online at engines. What do you think a good price for labor would be or hours?
