Default Build D16 for SCCA Street Prepared

I'm going to (hopefully) be picking up a D16z6 powered EG hatch soon, and I'm interested in building it for SCCA Street Prepared class.

So as far as mods, I can do pretty much any bolt on mods (Intake manifold, throttle body, exhaust, etc.), do the minimum overbore, and mill the head. I cannot port the head, but I can port match the intake manifold and throttle body. I can also get a tune.

I cannot use aftermarket pistons or cams (I'll be using the OEM 75.5mm pistons).

I'm just wondering if anyone else on the forum has built a D16 for Street Prepared class, and what kind of power you're making? And if I missed any threads where this has been discussed, feel free to redirect me.

I would imagine with the right suspension setup and a spot on tune you could easily build a stout D series based contender within those guidelines. I have personally built a ~160whp D that I believe would have been a decent auto X or track engine. Always stayed cool and had a pretty useable power band. D16z6 block, shotpeened Z6 rods, 89 Integra Pistons, OEM bearings except ACL mains. ARP rod bolts and head studs. D16y8 mls head gasket with 2 layers used. Stock port D16y8 head and intake manifold, 60mm TB port matched to manifold, 3" carbon fiber intake tube w/3.5" Vstack, 4-1 longtube header, 2.75" Magnaflow catback w/ test pipe (no cat, 1resonator, straight thru muffler) Hondata S100 chipped P28 tuned to 156whp. Pulled low 14s all day on Pepboys junk 205/15s in a stock 95 EX with EX trans/OE style clutch. With coil overs, bigger sway bars and little chassis bracing it would have been a very fun setup for the twisties. All done on OE fuel system too.

Nice setup! I'd love to use the P29 pistons as well, but that would be against the rules for SP category.

Anyone on here race an EG Civic in Street Prepared?

Haha, I actually started a thread over there too. I can't find any FSP racers over there either.

I can't remember exactly the wording for FSP, but do the intake manifold and throttle body have to be the OEM?

I ran with a similar setup to what you're building in my SMF car for 3 seasons and was competitive locally. It was a a stock A6 bottem end with a stock Z6 head with springs and retainers, but I had a stock cam in it, and an Edlebrock IM that probably hurt me most of the rpm range lol.

If you can run a larger throttle body, just get a factory 60mm throttle body from a B16/GSR car and port the stock manifold. Basic bolt-ons, tune and a 2.5" maximum sized exhaust should make it potent enough. If you're coming from a Miata, it's a similar concept; it's a momentum (slow) car, so keep your speed up.

I've autocrossed an ES NA Miata this past season, and the lines were fairly similar to what I take in my car, except for I could power over instead of lift-off oversteer when needed.

Engine and/or transmission must be swapped over as a unit: no head swaps, no cam swaps, no internal(s) swaps. "Swaps" have to come from the car years on the same "line" in the rulebook, too. You CAN rebuild to factory specs though. Anything goes up to the head/past(technically, 1" into the runners on both sides). VTEC cars cannot run an adjustable cam gear(non-VTEC cars can run them). That's basically it for engines.

Question: are you building for local or national competition? There's been some nationally competitive EG's in FSP(try roadraceautox's forums or google around, the formula is out there for a nationally competitive car), but the hot chassis now is the Mazda 323. I'm prepping my '97 Accord Coupe for FSP, but I have NO delusions about taking it to nationals haha.

You should check the rules real good.

I don't know if you can run a tuned ECU even since your 0bd1.

I'm SCCA friendly.

I'm just hoping to have fun locally mostly. I've been reading up on the rules a bunch, and I thought I read that the ECU could be tuned?

And yeah, like Chrisnick said, you can pretty much do anything up to and after the head, and any engine/transmission from the same year and model must be swapped over as a whole unit.

Obviously tires, wheels, suspension, and seat time will be much more important, but I'm just curious what kind of power people are making with FSP kind of setups.

I'd guess its possible to make about 130-140whp with a properly set up D16. I wouldn't go too wild if you're just trying to have fun locally. Rules allow any engine management system as long as factory sensors and wiring is retained. A jumper harness is legal to convert to obd1. I'd look at the various ST builds and base off that, those guys are making in the neighborhood of 120whp if k recall. You're lucky with the civic, lots of race setup info out there, my accord's a bit of a dark horse and I'm in the dark with info and development.

Yeah my guess is about 130whp at most. I'll take a look at some of the ST builds.
