1996 Accord Diagnostic process help
Hi all,
What a great site! I recently picked up a used Accord for my wife, and I followed the Muffin Man's AWESOME post, and was able to change out the headlights with some new eagle eyes! (Bumper Removal Procedure)
I ordered some cross drilled/slotted performance rotors, and some carbon fiber pads, and will replace those as soon as the weather clears up a little..I learned that I have the dreaded HOR design.. but thanks to the members here, I am gathering all the tools needed for the job. I will keep everybody posted.
Ok, now to the chase..
Application: 1996 Honda Accord LX 2.2L 4 cyl. Sedan, 4 speed auto tranny.
Problem Flare on 2-3 Upshift with moderate pedal application.
If I shift through the gears 'manually' using the shifter, as opposed to just placing it in D4, it shifts fine.
Ok, according to the service manual, pg 14-87, the possible causes listed are:
Nos 3, 15, 23,24, 19.
#3 throttle cable too long
#15 throttle valve B Stuck
#19 1-2 shift valve stuck
#23 clutch pressure control valve stuck
#24 2nd orifice control valve stuck
ok, # 3 being the first and seemingly the easiest, any body have any advice on how to adjust? or what else I should do/or check?
oh, I did fix the power steering it was sucking in MASSIVE air.. there is an updated new orange O-Ring that I got and installed.. It was super easy to change.. I can post part no's and a picture if any members are interested..
Thanks in advance for any help!

On the throttle body it will have two cables. One is for the the throttle body and the other is the kickdown cable for the tranny. Loosen the locknut for the kickdown cable and loosen or tighten the screw to adjust the slack in the cable. You want it to be just loose so it's not already putting pressure on the cable. Then tighten the locknut back down.
Ok,
I check it and it was already adjusted properly, but thanks for the know how, that's good to learn.
Ok Throttle Valve B? Location and how to perform a check?
Thank you

Based on your original post I am going to assume that you have access to the Service manual......
Item Location is found on pg 14-108. Part #16 (it is found inside the transmission)
Test procedure for throttle starts on pg 14-90

GhostAccord,
THANKS! I didn't even see that! I haven't had the car (or manual) that long.. I looked, but only saw the RR part!
Thanks again for pointing that out

No problem.... I have had the manual for years, and I'll be honest. I've never even looked at that part much before today. I just remember looking for information on solenoid valves before. I have only ever worked on manual Accords. I do know a little bit about automatics but not enough to really be of much help with diagnostics or testing.
Best of luck fixing your ride!

Heh heh.. Yeah.. Whats funny is that even this automatic transmission is almost built like a standard box.. but instead of planetary gear sets, the box is shifted by some sort of control solenoid system??.. hmm my guess is to avoid the Borg Warner patents ...So this is the clean sheet Honda design..a complex input system..LOTS of solenoids all over, and I guess some in the valve body, too..
yeah, looks like it's gonna be one of those 'learning experiences' heh heh..
