Default Alternate replacement motors?

Gentlemen,
My buddy has an '02 Civic DX (D17A1), 5 speed. His motor died, he needs a replacement.

We're currently calling local engine importers. Could you suggest some alternate swaps that are worth looking into?
We're not looking for anything crazy, but it wouldn't hurt to get a different, drop-in single cammer with a bit more power.

Any suggestions?

TIA

Not really much you can do there except swap over to the EX engine. I put EX engines into the LX/DX all the time (because it's easier to find), I just leave the VTEC solenoid unplugged and the owners never notice a difference. You could put the EX engine in and wire up VTEC and get some power gains out of it.

Thanks. How's this, for instance?

That's where I get a lot of engines from. I don't get em there because of price, I do it because of location and ship time.

That place is about double the going price of these engines by the way, but they have the fastest shipping and are close to me. If I were in your area, I'd get one from Canada because they're usually around $300 and most of the Canadian ones are in Toronto, Montreal, etc. which are closer to Miami/Atlanta.

I've gotten em off ebay canadian dealers. I'll go to LKQ, but if you call LKQ directly then their prices are higher than their ebay listings which is why I bid on LKQ's ebay ads.

Nationwide salvage listings: Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market

Sometimes you can find a rebuild on local CL. Or use the nationwide CL search so you don't have to go by city: Ad Hunt'r - Search ALL of Craigslist? and more!

Thank you, but I stay away from rebuilds, I don't trust them a bit. But you're right, sometimes you can find full swaps on CL, just need to get the timing right.

JDM Source in Alberta Walter, or you can try Sunrise JDM in Montreal, I got my D15B Vtec swap from them 7 or 8 years ago, still driving it.
