EX has power everything, and a sohc vtec motor
DX has no power anything, and a sohc Non-vtec motor

As a project car? What do you plan on doing? The SOHC D16 isn't much to work on...unless you have $$$ to burn. Better off getting a 5th Gen Hatch and do a swap. At least with a B16/18, you'll have better aftermarket support.

But if you could only choose between the two engines, definitely get the EX (VTEC) engine. Even though the VTEC doesn't do much but make a cool sound...with wilder cams it can hold it's own. Good luck.

I agree, if your wanting a project car save your money and get an older model hatch and use that money left over on your B18 engine...wish I would of thought of that 2 years ago. I gotta get a turbo now to get some decent hp out of my sohc.

if ur going for racing your car, get the dx. the dx offers no power steering and no a/c. rip out that 1.5L engine and slap a B18 or better yet H22 in that sucker. but sometimes i wish i had power door locks and power windows

Well my main reason for lookin for an EX or DX is because im sorta on a limited budget and I hate the Civic H/B. Im looking for something as a good daily driver but later on I plan on to mod it a bit for some extra HP. a b16 is a DOHC right? maybe like an SI engine? and a b18 is like a Type R engine right?? Now if im totally off let me know cause im just taking a stab in the dark at that because im pretty new to imports. If I do decide to go the route and replace the engine, about how much would I be lookin for to do that?

Thanks, and any comment appriciated...

Dude, before you jump into anything, do some EXTENSIVE research. Right now it appears that you are a complete virgin. Find a good shop that is reputable and get to know some fellow enthusiasts in your area. Scour the internet for honda-related sites and become a sponge for info. It will only help you in the long run.

Save for good quality mods as opposed to cutting corners. Stick with quality brand name parts.

Start out here:

http://www.vtec.net

Good luck.

Well, I've got a 98 Civic EX, my friend has a 99 Civic DX. Before I went turbo, me and him had similar if not the same exact mods, and there was no doubt I was hands down faster. Ususally 1st and 2nd would be pretty close with me ahead by half a car or so, but by 3rd (when I'd spend the most time in VTEC), I'd pull away cleanly. DX's and EX's powerband are remarkably similar, really it's not till about 5500-5700 when VTEC opens up on the EX that there's any difference, and since these cars redline at 7k, you can only take advantage of VTEC for roughly 1500rpms which is why it's not till high 2nd and into high 3rd that the EX puts distance on the DX. Overall, if you can swing it get the EX, but the DX will be ok with some help as well.

Get an EX.

My stock Hyundai Accent can outrun a DX, and my Accent only has 92hp .

if turbo: get the ex
if swap: get the dx(you'll be getting rid of the engine anyway)
